Stolen - this time from the eventing forum:
“It’s not the 'unting that 'urts 'em,
It’s the 'ammer, 'ammer, 'ammer on the 'ard 'i way.”
Gosh that’s hard to type.

You mean besides my Mother right
For remembering all of the dressage letters
All King Vikings Eat Shiny Happy Communist Monkeys Right Before Playing Football
For looking down to much
“When the horse isn’t there anymore, you will know!”
Gypsy gold does not chink and glitter,
It gleams in the sun and neighs in the dark.
Throw your heart over the fence and the horse will follow.
No good horse was ever a bad color.

i love both of these!
Same here!! I still try to wait as long as I can before letting them drink. :uhoh:
Okay…I’ll play…
“If you want to make a million bucks in the horse world, start with two million”.
A horse is worth a hundred dollars more if he can roll all the way over…(It’s one that I heard over and over when I was a kid).
If your horse isnt listening to you, you are asking the wrong question. (or something like that).

Let them drink, just small amounts while you are cooling out, untill they’ve had their fill… by that time they are cooled out, and NOT thirsty!

There’s that one about the white feet…it goes something like:
One white foot - buy him
Two white feet - try him
Three white feet - deny him
Four white feet - give him away
Four white feet and a white nose - knock him in the head and feed him to the crows.
There are a bunch of other onces like that too but I’ll leave them for someone else.[/QUOTE]
Crap. I’ve got a CHESTNUT. With FOUR white feet AND a white nose…
My current motto (although it may be more of a COTHism and less of a term of the trade) is:
Light off the leg, soft in the hand; ride the horse and not the plan.
Alas, how can anyone refuse the classic:
All King Edward’s Horses Can Make Big Farts
I’m telling you, it’s hard to forget.
As for the sock saying, I have a horse who has a sock on his hind left. And if a lucky sock is the reason for this amazing horse, I’ll be happy to call it that.
*Allah’s thumbprint: I could be wrong on this…but IIRC it’s an indent on the horse’s neck (from pressure in the womb?) that is either lucky or is a sign of swiftness.

I’ve also heard of it called a “prophet’s thumb,” and I heard the same thing- that its good luck.
I wouldn’t think that it’s good luck in a conformation class, however! Does anyone know if they take off points for it, and if so is it a lot or just a minor thing? Not for any particular reason, I’m just curious.

Should also read “Has fuzzy feet, flowing manes and huge stud fees”.

If wishes were horses then beggars would ride on fields of white stallions with fiery eyes.
Full version I have heard
“Heads up, hearts up;
Hands down, heels down.”
Oh I should also add (replying not editing to get 100th post yay), one of my favorites is:
Somewhere…Somewhere in time’s Own Space
There must be some sweet pastured place
Where creeks sing on and tall trees grow
Some Paradise where horses go,
For by the love that guides my pen
I know great horses live again.
~Stanley Harrison
that was beautiful
Rode hard and put away sweaty. Applies to horses in rough condition, and certain…(ahem)ladies!
Your head and your heart keep up,
Your hands and your heels keep down,
Your knees keep into your horses sides,
And your elbows into your own.
Honestly, that is how we were taught - to pinch with the knees!! Isn’t there a famous American showjumper who does that?
