Horse Rhymes, Rules, Traditions, and Sayings

Chestnut horses with black spots (Bend Or spots) can jump.

It’s like closing the barn door after the horses have gotten loose.

No hoof, no horse (I don’t think anyone said that one yet).

I thought that “two cowlicks” meant that that it was good horse?

Here’s my addition: I always heard if a horse could role all the way over - on both sides - that he was a good horse. HAHA!

more than two cowlicks on a horses head means theyre fast and unpredictable

anyone have an example to prove this one? haha ;)
Green + green = black and blue
(referring to green horse and green rider)

Dont put the cart before the horse.

Tell a gelding, ask a stallion, discuss it with a mare!

Ok, I’m kind of a collector…

“No hour of life is wasted that is spent in the saddle” --Winston Churchill

“There’s something about the outside of a horse that’s good for the inside of a man.” – Winston Churchill

“When I bestride him, I soar. I am a hawk: he trots the air; the earth sings when he touches it; the basest horn of his hoof is more musical than the pipe of Hermes.”
–William Shakespeare. King Henry V.

“Horse, thou art truly a creature without equal, for thou fliest without wings and conquerest without sword”
– The Koran

“A horse gallops with his lungs,
Preserves with his heart, And wins with his character.”
–Tesio

And my favorite…

“And God took a handful of southerly wind, blew His breath over it, and created the horse.”
-Bedouin Legend

“If before your horse you straddle
First of all you check your saddle”

You don’t ride the head

The all-white face is worth the wait.

I guess maybe this refers to paints? or just horses with big blazes??

This is my horse! He has two cowlicks smack in the center of his head, and he’s a chestnut, and he has too white feet… He’s fast, won a quarter mil on the track, definitely unpredictable, and has given me some of the best rides!

You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink.

And to make sure you turn off the hose: Right tighty, lefty loosey.

I always heard 2 cowlicks (double whorl) meant trouble.

I’ve been told that too! I’ve always gotten the idea that 2 cowlicks= extra personallity for better or worse. but could be skewing this w/ my own experience.

I’ve also heard of it called a “prophet’s thumb,” and I heard the same thing- that its good luck.

I wouldn’t think that it’s good luck in a conformation class, however! Does anyone know if they take off points for it, and if so is it a lot or just a minor thing? Not for any particular reason, I’m just curious.
As far as I know it is not considered a conformation flaw. My horse has one and we did an green conformation division this past summer to help fill the class (weren’t going for points in the 1st years, so I was happy to help out) and the judges did not say anything-- after placing the class they told exactly what they liked and didn’t like about the horse and what they took off for. His is fairly noticable.

I have found that the horses with two whorls - if they’re side by side = TROUBLE. If they’re vertical to each other = smart & opionated, but not trouble.

So what do three whorls mean? I have a 2 year old who has 3 whorls perfectly shaping a triangle, white on each pastern, cream colored hair in his ears (he’s a dark bay) and zebra stripes when he sheds out!
