Probably. At least, from what I have heard.
They are looking at pictures not only words. I had an as for a Rambo flagged because I used a photo of it on my horse. This ad had several pictures of the horse, just NO USEFUL INFO about said horse!!
I just saw one yesterday that said âlow to mid six figuresâ. Um⊠giving an awfully large range there. 100k to 500k? That is what low to mid makes me think. I get that sometimes with training or more showing that price can increase and appreciate when ads state as much. I also saw one yesterday that said $85k until his show season begins next month and price will increase. Great, state that and give a base line!
At least the ranges give you SOME idea, although obviously peopleâs opinions of what is âlowâ âmidâ and âhighâ vary. I saw one that said âhigh 6 figures.â I think that was a typo. Unless itâs an WEG quality jumper or something, I donât think too many horses are actually priced in the high 6s There was a pretty nice but not world-class looking jumper on BigEq the other day listed for $1.4 million. I think someone got confused with the zeros. Itâs now been revised down to $140,000.
My general experience seems to be that âlowâ starts with a 1-3, mid starts with a 4-6, and high starts with a 7. So a low 5 figures horse would probably be between $10,000-35,000, a mid 5 figures horse would probably be between $40,000-65,000, and high 5 figures over that.
People are nuts with their pricing. Itâs all over the map. Thatâs nothing new but somehow facebook makes it more obvious. When people post no price itâs maddening because Iâve seen 15.3 plain bay average type show hunters turn out to be $5000, $50,000, and everything in between!
Okay, just so that I can get a little confirmation or whether I am crazy or whether they are crazy⊠Like letâs play price this horse (real horses but some minor identifying details changed to protect their identity). For all of these itâs a Mid-Atlantic location (and assume no vices or unusual veterinary issues) and a gelding.
17.2 9 year old WB. Attractive coloring but plainish looking. Purported to be very kind and easy going. Still doesnât consistently get his changes. Shown 2â6-3â0 for about 2 months at big shows. Always finished last or out of the ribbons. No exaggeration, always dead last in everything.
16.3 8 year old WB. Attractive coloring but plainish looking. Also purported to be kind and easy going. Great flatwork. Has only jumped crossrails, not really putting courses together yet. Changes still iffy. Done one or two unrated dressage shows. Never shown otherwise.
16.3 4 year old WB. Attractive coloring but a real sewing machine mover. Very very green. Has only jumped crossrails, not really putting courses together yet. Not even started working on changes. Never shown or been off property.
17.0 9 year old WB. Attractive coloring and nice looking. Also purported to be kind and easy going. Years of solid show results in the hunters. Not the winner in the best of company but a solid contender at 2â6-3â most places. Not a hack winner but gets a pastel.
17.3 8 year old WB. Attractive coloring and nice looking. Also purported to be kind an easy going. No show record at all. Not a hack winner but a great jump.
Wow, is it obvious what I am shopping for? (huge easygoing 2â6-3â0 hunter thatâs got attractive coloring). LOL
I think there may be a long line of us looking for the same oneâŠ
No doubt thatâs the case some of the time, but I think it can also be the case that there might be some flexibility in the pricing, and they want you to call. I was surprised at the number of horses I was shown that were above my budget but that the sellers were willing to come down to my budget, and if they had posted their asking price we wouldnât have called.
Yep, this is a big one.
I suggested your sale horse to someone BTW, heâs very nice
Itâs like buying anything else, there an expectation some haggling will be involved. Itâs not all comission oriented, especially dealing with private sellers not Pros and agents. Shopping online, you might not be able to tell if you are dealing with an agent or private sellerâŠheck, you donât know who is representing what in the real world and those shopping adventures are funny to recount but waste a lot of time and money dealing with the truely delusional.
One good way to shop is to look for trainer websites, they usually have a list of sale horses and you can select those closest to you. Avoid falling in love with one only to find out itâs currently 1500 miles away.
You have shared you are taking clients to alot of shows this year, shopping at the shows is a great way to go. Most better horses sell by word of mouth anyway, let everybody know what you are looking for. If they donât have one, they might know somebody who does.
Anyway, if you are looking for a site with better, show quality horses and have a decent budget, The Exchange is probably the best one.
Thank you! He is a pretty great guy
He is exactly what she needs/wants⊠youâre just a little far at the moment. But she finds her way to FL from time to time so I have my fingers crossed. I think it would be a good match. Great rider, GREAT home too (sheâs a vet).
He is basically my dream horse, but definitely not in my budget anytime soon  Thankful that my friend asked me to help sell him and I get to ride him for a bit at least!
I purchased my horse from a FB ad
What is attractive coloring? Iâm thinking pinto because thatâs my favorite but some like chestnuts?
I actually donât care about coloring, itâs sort of a coincidence that these horses all have it. Not pinto but either dapple gray or dark with chrome-- the coloring most hunter people find attractive. For me they do have to have a CUTE FACE (so I can envision it when I pay the vet bills) but I am not super hung up on coloring otherwise. I have a preference (chestnut) but I also own bays with minimal white. Iâm mostly kidding about the coloring. A good horse is the right color.
ok I totally agree
I want to know the prices!!! These are usually the types of horses I fall out of my chair when I hear the price people want for them. Donât deny me!!! Especially horses with iffy changes that are hunters. You know whatâs not iffy??? the score you get when you blow the lead change.
I wanted people to guess but no one wants to play today Should I just reveal?
