Horse shopping in Canada

I have been looking for a children’s hunter for awhile, and haven’t had any luck finding anything already in the states (NE) that is in my budget so I have decided to start looking in Canada. I have seen some threads about shopping in Canada but looking to see if anyone has any additional suggestions. 4 -10 yrs., can be green but need something quiet and well started that will be able to move up to 3’ within a year. Prefer a WB. Needs to be suitable for a teen to bring along working with a great trainer that has experience with young horses. Budget low to low mid 5 figures. I realize I’m looking for a unicorn but maybe someone has one? Any suggestions on breeders or farms to contact in Canada, within driving distance from border at Buffalo, NY? Thanks!!

Aileron Stables PEI, Slatehill Sporthorses NS. Better to call than to look at websites - neither keep up too much with them.

NS has a lot of great horses if you’re willing to look. www.atlanticrider.com classifieds are a good place to start, or the Facebook group “Maritime horses for sale/tack stud” (weird name, lots of ads you kind of want to just forget you saw, but some gems in there).

Try Peter Gisborn in Erin, ON

or Mac and Christi McQuaker of Gryphon Farms in Schomberg, ON

Windswept Farms in Georgetown, ON has a lot of nice prospects, too

Kim Mervyn in Georgetown, ON is also a good source:

(Georgetown and Erin are about 15 min apart, Schomberg about 30 minutes north/east of there)

Both are about 2.5 hours from Buffalo, give or take traffic. There are quite a few more trainers within about an hour radius that are worth going to see, as well.

Check out the Ontario Show Horses for Sale group on FB.

Also, contact
Heidi MacInnes (I actually think she has some ring ready horses might be exactly what you’re looking for)

Lindsay Bradshaw (She currently has some lovely options as well)

Both are in Nova Scotia with very solid programs that will measure up anywhere.

Not advertising, just responding. I am currently selling my DWBXApp mare.

PM I will forward the ad.

Thanks for the suggestions! Unfortunately I think NS is too far. But the ones in the Ontario area are great! Thanks again and would love some additional suggestions.

Molly, you might want to re-consider that. Prices are typically better than in ON and just north-east of Maine.

I’ve lived and horse shopped in both locations

Medford Meadows, Jenn Sarsfield in NS as well as Carmaz Stables in NB, Shawna Rinzler Johnson. I know Shawna has a nice one for sale right now who placed at the Royal in the young horse line classes and is now going well undersaddle, did baby greens this year I think? Both gals would be easy to find on facebook!! Definitely lots of valid options in the Maritimes. Lindsay Bradshaw and Heidi MacInnis for sure as well, as mentioned above.

I second all the NS breeders that have been mentioned. I bought my Oldenburg hunter from Restless Pines. If you can drive there, I agree the prices are generally better than in ON. I can recommended a few other if you think you might be able to come in NS.

Sent you a PM…

W Charlot Farms! Honestly there is no way you won’t walk out with what you are looking for. They have so many incredible horses for sale and the owners are great to work with.

To be honest, with that budget, you can find something with more experience than what is usually offered from W Charlot. I like a lot of the horses they breed, but I do find that they are usually a little hotter than I would want for a horse for a young teen to trainer.

But that’s my opinion.

S&S gave a great list. I would add Chris Delia of Chris Delia Stables, Darcy Hayes of Hayes LTD, Bob Sharpe of Sharpe Investments, Natalie Smith of Monterra Farms, Scott and Anne McKay of Greenhaven Stables, and John Jamieson of Endless Journey Farn/Jamieson International. They all are really great pros, with quality horses  But yes, I would check out FB groups and the like.

Try the Facebook group - Ontario Horses for sale to get an idea…

Thanks for all the suggestions!!

Have seen all of Heidi MacInnes’s very recently (boarded with her) - those horses are worth checking out, and Heidi is for sure worth an FB message to chat with. Lovely person, and some awesome horses.

EWSZ has lovely ones in Arva Ontario.

I would second this opinion. I have one of theirs currently and he was extremely well started but not overfaced as a youngster and I think that speaks volumes about their breeding and training program. They also have a farm in Ocala(IIRC) and I know some of their sale horses are there also. I’d call to make sure what you want is in Canada and not in FL!
