I’ve looked up his race record and watched the replays. He’s got some grit!! I’m looking for a laid back kinda guy to do trail riding and some lower level eventing. What are some particular areas to check on a horse that has as extensive a record as he does? Any behavioral issues to watch for? Generally I’m attracted to the old campaigners because they’ve been around the block, seen a lot and done a lot. Anything interesting in these bloodlines too? I’m going to get lots of pics and video when we visit next week, would just like to have a little “checklist” of things to take special note of. Any feedback is welcome!!
What makes you interested in this specific horse straight off the track if you’re looking for a very specific disposition? It seems like an OTTB a year off the track with solid trail and eventing experience could be a really good fit.
Horses with long race records often have really solid legs. I wouldn’t skimp on a PPE and x-rays. Track jewelry isn’t a dealbreaker for everyone but it is helpful information to have. Also, if you decide to sell (expected or unexpected) the next home may care a lot more about wear and tear than you do.
I’d want to observe the horse both in the stall and at liberty in the pasture. For any horse, I look for evidence of cribbing, stall walking, weaving, etc. I also like to see a horse that is relaxed when being turned out and interacts well with other horses.
FWIW I love E Dubi get…I bought 1 and 10 days after his last start he competed in a small unrecognized at BN and finished 5th on his dressage score . Calm cool smart sound horse.
