Horse shopping

Hi! I’m looking to lease a horse and have been looking on a few different online websites (such as BIGEQ), but I’m a little confused as to how it works. Is the listed lease price for a specific amount of time, like for a year or so, or is it indefinite? Also, is there a way to look for a specific monthly rate?

Unless otherwise noted, the lease will be the annual price. Monthly leases are far less common.

I’m going to say this with all the kindness in the world: if you’re asking these kinds of questions to a message board, you don’t need to be looking for leases online.

You need to talk to your coach/trainer and have them help you set expectations and look for a suitable horse. Going out there messaging people about leases on FB or BigEq without a very intimate understanding of the situation is asking (best case) to get blocked or (worst case) scammed.

Monthly leases are rare, short term leases will usually be listed as such, and generally the price is yearly. Most people won’t let their horses go anywhere outside of an approved program, and that requires them talking to your trainer. Usually your trainer can find you something for a good price on a great horse that would never be listed online.

Talk to your trainer. If they set you up with something that feels strange or doesn’t make sense, that’s worth bringing here to hear all of COTH argue over semantics (but probably give you a great gut check in the process).

Good luck OP!
