Horse show tack stall, or lack thereof

Have been showing w/ AQHA trainer, go to show, several of us split an extra stall for tack. These shows are usually 4-7d in length, definately makes it worth it.

Am going to go on my own to an upcoming show that the barn is not going to. Planning on going saturday, cruise around the place to let horsie settle in & get used to things, show on sunday. Doesn’t seem worth it to get an entire tack stall for me, for what amounts to 24hours.

So what do people do with their stuff if they don’t get a tack stall? I don’t know that weather will be conducive to tacking up outside by the trailer…

Trunk(s) and saddle and bridle racks in the aisle outside the stall. Hay stacked there too if you have room, otherwise haul it from the trailer.

If you store anything expensive like tack or trendy grain/supplements in the trunks overnight, definitely lock the trunks. I prefer to keep that kind of stuff in the car if I’m not actively using it. Too many friends have had stuff walk away overnight (or even just sitting unattended for long periods during the day).

Groom and tack in the stall as much as possible (keep it clean by picking it often). Finishing touches in the aisle outside the stall. I don’t miss the storage of a tack stall nearly as much as the cross ties in a grooming stall!

Keep your saddle and bridle in the car overnight. Then bring portable racks to use during the day. You should be able to fit everything else in a trunk that you can leave in the aisle.

How are you getting to the show? On occasion I would go alone and I’d work out of my trailer, even though I had a stall for my horse. I’d take him to the trailer and tack him up there. In between classes if there wasn’t a long break I’d tie him to the trailer with a hay net and sit in a chair and chill. Those were actually my favorite shows, to be honest. But only if I was showing for two days. Any more than that, it was with my trainer and others from my barn, so full setups with tack stalls and dressing rooms.

I go all the time to shows and have never paid for a tack stall unless it’s regionals or a show where I get to split the costs and am there for more than 3 days. When I don’t have a tack stall, I either tack up at my trailer or use my mobile tack caddy to take my saddle and ‘stuff’ back and forth from my trailer to the show barn each day/night.
