We just built our own barn and are getting ready to bring the horses home, but I was just wondering how many fans per stall there should be. I currently have one fan per stall, but I’m wondering if I should get one extra per stall. I don’t have any aisle ceiling fans, but the way the barn is positioned it naturally ventilates great. I do have a horse that doesn’t sweat well, so I will be keeping an extra fan in her stall. I normally would without question have two fans in every stall, but the fans we got our the ramm ones and they are really powerful. For context we live in the northern end of the South Florida region.
I don’t think you’ll ever regret having two fans per stall. Where I’m at now the wash rack has two and it really moved air even on the stuffiest day.
Just be sure they are the closed motor fans as opposed to the traditional box fan,
One of these will be plenty for a 12x12. This is what my horse and his “roomie” have in their 2-stall barn/run-in, and they move a lot of air. I can’t even put them on high because they’ll blow the bedding around. The horses love them. I have one that struggles to sweat when the heat/humidity really soars too (we get 100+ with super high humidity here). He does fine with this fan.
Im in NE FL and it’s hot as hell here by 11 am. OMG. I have box fans on the front of each stall and closed motor fans from Tractor Supply mounted overhead. Keeps the stall nice and cool. My barn is very well ventilated and often has a breeze anyway also.
ETA my TSC fans are like the ones RhythmNCruise posted, only about 1/2 as much.
This is the fan we bought last year for our barn – I agree that it’s very powerful. I keep it on low until the misters are turned on, at which time it’s set at medium. The only time it goes on high is when it helps dry out the bedding in the evening, after the misters are shut down.
The peace of mind of having this fan, instead of box fans or knock-offs, is worth it to me (and I’m someone who only ever saw box fans in the stalls, back when I boarded my horses).
Yeah, my barn won’t even allow box fans. When I asked about putting fans up for the horses, the BM was very worried because he thought I meant box fans. When the fans came, he helped me put them up and he was very impressed with them. When other boarders ask about fans, he tells them they have to be like the ones I have.
I grew up with box fans too. Heck, I had my own barn for 20 years and all I used was cheap box fans. I’m glad to have something safer and more effective now.
For me the limit to fan number is the noise level.
My barn builder installed fans that are industrial fans commonly used in big poultry facilities. One is noisy enough, but when they all are going they are loud enough to limit conversation and television viewing in my house 100 yards away. So the only time I use them is when I have pressure washed the barn to aid drying. They do move a lot of air.
The lesson is to look at the decibel levels for fans before you buy and install.
