Horse tattoo for older horse - JC

hi all - i posted about this a while back; i am looking for my horse’s JC number that was tattooed on her lip and is now unreadable. she was a 1997 foal, and i know that with the jockey club, any horse over 25 you must submit a research request for them to look through their records to find the horse’s tattoo … i had filled out all the information to the T (her white markings, whorls, etc.) and they came back and said they couldn’t find anything. i ended up doing it again several months later with the same results.

any idea how else i could find out what her tattoo is? all i know is that it starts with A, corresponding with year year of birth. i would really like to know what it is

Do you have her papers, or anything else with her registration number, like an old coggins or bill of sale? The tattoo is the registration number with the letter swapped out for the first two digits.

Do you know her registered name?

The partial tattoo search on the JC site definitely goes back to 1997 and earlier. So you could search with her color/markings, the letter, and just go through various combinations of numbers until you come across her name… but it might take a while.

Yes I do. I thought with her age (older than 25), I couldn’t physically search, I had to fill out the form and submit to them

The tattoo lookup box will only go back 25 years because then the tattoos start to recycle. But the tattoo research section goes back farther because it specifies the year in the search. I just used some random combinations and was pulling up records from 1987.

Do you mind sharing the link for that page here? Thank you so much

It’s the same as the tattoo lookup. Just scroll down until you can select letter/year.

I’m assuming you’re talking about this, right?
I don’t think I can use this because all I know is the first letter, “A”, and I don’t know any number… it also says if your horse is older than 25 to complete the form and send it in, which is what i’ve done twice and they said they couldn’t find a match - sorry If I’m being obtuse lol

Yes, we’re talking about that.

Select the letter and year. Start with 00 for the numbers. Select the markings. Click search. Click through each hit to see if it’s your horse. If it’s not, go back, change the numbers to 01 and search again. Etc etc until you find her.

It takes time, but it’s certainly possible.

Not understanding whether you have her JC papers verifying correct name spelling and foaling date or going by what you were told?

And, just a thought, if JC can’t find her, could she be in a different data base? Like AQHA or SB? Tattoo just verifies ID to enter and race at a pari mutual regulated track and is not unique to JC.
