Horse tattoos
Unless you’re willing to pay several hundred for a beautiful portrait by a talented artist, I’d shy away from a design that requires the artist to do realistic eyes. Eyes done right are stunning. Eyes done not-quite-right look absolutely awful.

I like the look of a simple line drawing for a tattoo. I’m headed to the tattoo parlor this week to get mine done.
Just please bear in mind that if you are imagining an actual portrait or image of a horse (head/body/dressage horse etc) not many tattoo artists have ever seen a horse in person or have horse experience, and are NOT good at photorealism or drawing horses. I have a jumper silhouette that I love. I gave the artist pictures and helped her redesign it. My horse’s head was very close to having a huge block head despite the original design looking nothing like it. She just had no idea and would not have noticed it. She was happy to tweak it after I showed her a number of pictures and explained what needed fixed. I am very happy with the result, but if I wanted any realistic horse images I would prepare to pay the most high end tattoo artist I could find hundreds of dollars. I would also find someone who has successfully done horse designs/portrait work in the past.

Otherwise I would recommend going with someone more generic, like horse shoes.

I am demanding a new tattoo for my birthday in February. I’m 90% sure it will be some sort of a horse shoe type thing.

Though I really, really love some of that woodblock (etch?) style illustration stuff I have at the top of my board. That horse on the wheel is so beautiful.

The realistic looking tattoos can go downhill real quick. A silhouette or something more outlined will look good. And seriously… seriously, take the time to find a good tattoo artist. It might not seem like a big deal NOW, but it will make a huge difference 5 or 20 years down the road.

1000% agree with this. Know what you want, research your artist. Good artists have waiting lists and are not cheap. And your body is worth the investment, if you are looking for an art piece.

Do your research. Find a quality artist (word of mouth, Instagram, tattoo websites). And by all means, if you don’t feel comfortable with anything about the situation, don’t do it.

I have 3- I have Epona’s knot on one upper arm, barbed wire twisted up with a pair of horse shoes on the other upper arm (got that when I finished my blacksmithing classes) and I just recently got the Morgan sport horse brand on my inner forearm

I found a picture! However, it’s a mirror selfie so not a great picture, and it’s from when it was first done so still a bit red, and it’s almost a wee bit risque - but you get the idea.

I have a small horse shoe on the inside of my left wrist. I don’t think many people even notice.

This is exactly what I want but I want one for each horse that I have owned in my life, they will most probably have to go up either from my foot to my knee or up my spine, but I want a bigger one at the back of my neck for my heart horse.

My Mother who hates tattoos thinks this would be a great idea to celebrate being cancer free but I still have to wait a year, which in a way I don’t want to so I think I might just have to go get them soon. That can be one of my new years resolutions.

These are all so beautiful! I agree with everyone saying that you should have a good artist for portrait tattoos. I personally don’t like them much, I feel like even human portraits look terrible and wonky, let alone horse ones

I’m looking forward to getting my first on the side of my arm. It’ll be a heartbar to commemorate my wonderful mare (yes, my heart horse as well :)) and the struggle I’ve had to get her sound.

I love mine - its a year old, cost me all of $60 and took under 10 minutes. I found the image online somewhere. Its on my forearm, so when its not appropriate to have it I can cover it. But when I look at it, it seems to be my trigger to give me the confidence I often lack. Hopefully it doesn’t come out too big, I’m using photo bucket… [IMG]http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll91/Ozzys_mum/tattoo_zps0f664c55.jpg)
" I like Bigbutt’s, and I cannot lie"!

Kinda blurry, but mine is a rearing horse based off of a drawing I made for that purpose. I’ve had it for 13 years now. I figure by the time I’m so old that it’s looking saggy, I’ll be too arthritic to turn my head to see it. I’d be planning more by now but hubby is not a fan of ink and since he has to see itore that I do, I’m holding off.

I selected the artist based off of a gorgeous wolf tattoo I saw on an ex. AOPA in State College, PA.

oh, that is beautiful. I love it.

SweetMutt, that is very nice!

I’ve been thinking of getting a horse tattoo to celebrate a milestone birthday, to recognize my love of horses, and how I’ve perservered and am still riding.

Two major falls that left me very hurt and, recently, coaching issues have had me near quitting a few times. Good friends have helped me through these times (riders too), and I have found a great coach and made the move to dressage. I’ve learned so much with her over the past 6 months and am happy again. Yay!

All I have come up with are horse shoes up my left side (near ribs)…but, with scar tissue from broken ribs will likely make it even more painful!

So…still pondering!

I have a small outline horse head on my shoulder that I got years ago with friends. I’m planning on doing something like this carousel horse on my back (starting on my lower back and going up.

Just saw this that has some cool ideas.

My first horse was a holsteiner, so I got the holsteiner brand with his show name (Credo) Following the “v” shape under the brand.

I have a horseshoe on the side of my upper thigh. I got it about a year ago, for a very good friend (also a rider) who had cancer. Sorry for the quality, it was taken right after the tattoo was done.
