I am interested in getting my very first tattoo and want it to be something horsey and pretty. I’ve seen a few I like so far but wanted to poke at you lot to see if you have any ideas or thoughts.
Thanks!!

I have a small horse shoe on the inside of my left wrist. I don’t think many people even notice.

I currently have three, but only one was intentionally horse related. I have a lily on my back, between my shoulders, because I love lilies. I got a new horse in July, her barn name was pretty, but it just didn’t fit, so on the drive back from picking her up, my friend and I were tossing names around when Lily came up as a possibility. It stuck, so now I have a Lily for the lily tattoo:D.
I got this to mark the 1 year anniversary of a riding accident that I was lucky to walk away from.
My once in a lifetime horse passed last March, and I will get a tattoo to memorialize her, but the artist I thought would be perfect for it moved to Arizona, so I will either have to find someone closer or fly down and have Trish do the work.
I LOOOOOOVE MY TATTOO.
But that’s because it’s my brand logo horse…and was designed from the pics I have of Boomer jumping into water.
The other I REALLY want to get is this lady here:
but she’s going to hurt. And the first one hurt waaay bad. and I would change the colors a bit.

So if I were to downsize a seahorse it would be to something like these:

Oh I love all those!
I’ve been looking at tattoos and designs and found a few I really like. This one is top of the list at the moment. Very elegant and I LOOOVE Blood Bays.

Well, that’s clearly an Arabian; are you wanting breed specific or just a horse tattoo?
personally, i’ve never seen a good (realistic) horse tattoo…
the cartoony ones, while cute, would so not be my style!
I’ve contemplated one similar to this. My artist is amazing and can draw me up something beautiful based on this concept. I’d go black and grey, but that’s just my preference.
Beautiful but… I’d rather have that on the wall where I can look at it!
I have one tattoo, which has nothing to do with horses. My next one will though. Its going to be the pictogram for equestrian events from the 1996 Olympics. When I was 10, my family when to watch some Olympic events, one of the being the dressage and show jumping phases for eventing. And that was when 10 year old me decided that horses were going to be a big part of my life. While I’m not working with them anymore, they were (and are) are big part of who I am, so I want the pictogram to symbolize that.

I’m not looking into anything breed specific. I want something elegant but not outrageous. Dressage-y is good but not required.
I have four horse shoes running up the side of my spine. They’re based off of a shoe I have from my large pony, who was my heart horse. I love my tattoo because even though it’s almost always hidden, I know it’s there so he’s always with me.
At some point, I’d like to have a small holly leaf added somewhere for my current mare, but I don’t know where I want it.

So find some pics of horses that look right to you, take that to your tattoo artist of choice and describe what you’re looking for. If that person is any good, they will be able to create some original artwork, just for you.
I’m worried that you’re looking for a tattoo to copy, which…just no.
If you’re looking for photo realistic, you need a really, really good artist for that. Dawai Zhang in CA comes to mind: http://www.daweitattoo.com/?page_id=1282&paged=9
Or maybe Mike DeVries: http://www.mdtattoos.com/Tattoos/Animal_Tattoos/
Bigbutt (I hate calling you that!) that’s exactly the type of tattoo I want, not a picture but the outline. I love that.
I wanted one for my heart horse, but didn’t want a huge portrait or his name (since it’s a man’s name and didn’t want to spend forever explaining why I had a man’s name tattooed on me). so I got his brand. Like someone else said, it cost $50 and took less than 10 min but it’s special to me.

I love mine but can’t seem to find any pictures of it. I’ll post tonight if I can dig one up. It’s 5 horse shoes together such that they form a star in the middle, with some filigree accents. It’s on the back of my right shoulder, pretty much from my spine to the point of my shoulder.
I agree with taking some ideas to an artist and having them draw up options for you. This will take some money and some time, but it’s worth it.
SweetMutt–Please find pics. That sounds lovely!
Unless you’re willing to pay several hundred for a beautiful portrait by a talented artist, I’d shy away from a design that requires the artist to do realistic eyes. Eyes done right are stunning. Eyes done not-quite-right look absolutely awful.
I like the look of a simple line drawing for a tattoo. I’m headed to the tattoo parlor this week to get mine done.
