Horse themed tattoos?

I’m not sure how much of the chronicle crowd is a tattoo crowd, but I thought I’d give it a go.

Does anyone have horse themed tattoos? Anyone gotten a tattoo for a specific horse?

I’m considering it. It won’t be my first tattoo. My beloved horse I’ve had for 15 years has a funny freeze brand on her belly. I’ve thought about getting a matching “brand” small, in black ink, maybe on my ankle.

My baby horse gave me a scar on my lower back( in the tramp stamp spot) when he was a yearling by shoving me into a shelf. I’ve said jokingly that as I take him up the levels (eventing) I’m going to put stars across that scar.

I’ve never been a fan of tattooed pictures of horses, they always seem too cartoony for me. And horseshoes look like sports logos.(I grew up in indiana haha). I prefer tattoos with personal meaning, and generally in areas I can hide day to day.

Anyone else?

Ohhhhh do a search, quick, haha. Lots of us have ink, lots of us have horse-themed ink.

Curious, how did she get a freeze brand on her…belly???

I wish I knew! She’s an ottb from florida. I got her when she was 9, she’s 21 now. I have no idea, and I’ve never met another horse with a belly freeze brand.

I have a horseshoe on my ankle. Pretty simple, I dunno if I would get anything more complex. I’m on the “OTTB connect” Facebook page and in the last couple weeks there was a tattoo thread. Some of the tattoos were downright cringeworthy. Mostly the portraits. Maybe the portraits are just tough to get right, but after seeing them I’d be cautious getting one.

That being said, it’s your body, and I personally really like your ideas!

I don’t have any tattoos currently, but here are a few I’m planning on getting and have seen others have! A bit between the shoulder blades (It was a full cheek snaffle), OTTB lip tattoos on wrists, the sound waves of a neigh, and I’ve seen someone ask around if someone could sketch her out a horse skull for a tattoo (she asked me because I had a Day of the Dead art project that she saw). And I’ve seen this guy in a video who had warmblood breed logos down his forearm.

I have two tattoos, both horse themed.

A tribal horse (bout as big as tissue box) between my shoulder blades and on my right arm a silhouette of a woman on a galloping horse that says “cowgirl spirit” underneath.

Saw that second one on a shirt when I was 14, and told myself if I still liked it at 18, I would get it… & I did! Still love it at 24.

Imagine my surprise when my DD was in the hospital (nothing horse related) and the dr asked “any tatoos”? and she replied yes!!!

she’s 19 so it’s her choice, but I have one and now I cringe at how cheesy it is 30 years later (yup a dolphin but it’s small and on my hip so invisible with underwear).

She has the Oldenburg brand (not huge on her ribcage- it’s hidden by a thick bikini strap) in memory of our much loved mare who died in a freak accident a few years ago. I think it sorta looks like an empty chess piece, but she’s thrilled with it.

This is mine, on the top of my foot:

The first few drawings my tattoo guy (yes, I have a tattoo guy) drew were of a very cartoony horseshoe. I actually brought him a shoe I had kept from my childhood horse to draw it from. The initials belong to my older brother who was killed in an accident.

I have four horse themed ones- Epona’s shield, a tribal looking barbed wire with horse shoes, the Morgan Sport Horse brand and a scene with mountains, a trotting horse and a compass.

Line drawing of a horse from a cave painting, right shoulder blade. Not really commemorating any particular horse, more about reaching personal milestones in my life when I got it.

I have a jumping horse w/ rider on my right shoulder blade, then two fleur de lis/lace style tattoos with hidden horsey objects on my left arm. Wrist has a few horse shoes tucked into the lace, and my shoulder matches the wrist and also has a snaffle at the top. I’m trying to adult and not get more, but it’s hard… I have two others, not horse related.

I have two horse themed tattoos.

The first is the triple goddess moon symbol )O( with the crescents forming the necks of line art horse heads.

The second is a cursive letter Q on the top of my left foot. When I was showing as a kid, another girl and I had a ritual of writing our horse’s names on our left foot with sharpie the day of the show–for luck. I kept doing it into adulthood and finally realized that, hey, I could have it inked permanently now.

The Q is for Quincy (Take a Chance on Me), who goes by Q, Miss Q, Q Poo and many other shortened versions.

I have one that was not at all what I originally intended, but I love it. I was in the same boat as you…didn’t want a portrait or a horseshoe. I love Native American type things, especially the “indian ponies” and whatnot. Started toying with the idea of feathers, and found this on pinterest: https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/80/ad/68/80ad6824651edeb3156e3c226c71cc09.jpg

I ended up getting this done:

It’s less horse-themed than I originally intended, but I kind of like it that way. And I love the piece. I had considered a snaffle bit, until a non-horsey friend remarked that it looked like handcuffs. I didn’t want to have to explain that for the rest of my life.

As a side note, feathers are now a “thing” and super trendy and I feel the need to explain the fact that I got this done BEFORE that bandwagon rolled into town.

One

Two

I’m getting one tomorrow!

I have several tattoos, and this will be my second horse-themed one. It’s a horse head profile that is going on my thigh. I’m super excited to see what the artist comes up with. My other one is a my little pony on my back/upper shoulder, with my older pony’s markings.
