So I’m throwing this out there to see if anyone else has had the same problem that I’m having but has resolved it. It’s become clear to me that I really need a living quarter trailer. Most living quarter trailers are slant load, and I typically own 16.2+ hand warmblood giants. I’ve looked into adding a lq to a 4h head to head but the dealer told me it was going to be about 40 ft long, 100k, and it would be hard to sell later. What have people made work for them?
How many horses do you need to haul?? No LQ in ours, but we had a 5 horse slant (I DO NOT haul slant with big horses!!) factory customized as a BIG 2 + 1. 7 wide/8’ tall, the plus 1 could be plus 2 with 4’ wide slants…with a large dressing room…could be bigger for a LQ!! Ours is 21 feet in the horse compartment. We have a full rear ramp and a 4’ ramp on the curb side where we normally load and back into two forward facing rear stalls. I never have to back a horse out and they all have plenty of space.
One thing you can do is get a 3 horse slant with LQ and give your big horse 2 stalls. That definitely makes it more roomy. The other things you can do is take out the rear tack (or don’t get one at all if you are custom ordering) and your back stall becomes fairly large.
Also, don’t get one of the newer trailers that is only 6’9" wide! Get either a 7’6" wide or 8’ wide trailer. It makes a difference.
I have a 2 horse gooseneck slant load with no rear tack. It also has 42" stalls. My 17hh warmblood can literally turn around in the back stall. She also fits in the front stall but it’s not very roomy.
That being said, a slant load will never be as spacious for the horse as a straight load.
Crosscreeksh I really need a 4 horse. I always end up with more stuff, so I’m trying to plan ahead.

We have a 4-Horse LQ Logan XTR. It’s an 8x8’ slant load with extra wide partitions. The only problem with it is a couple of the stalls are a wee bit shorter since the wheel well is there but there is plenty of headroom. The two stalls without the wheel well are plenty long enough for our 17.3hh guy. I just don’t put my biggest guys there (17+ hh). It’s aluminum over steel and is so nice to haul. Including the gooseneck it is still 43’ long, but we opted for a longer short wall in the LQs we often stay in there for several weeks with two dogs and the wide stalls.
Call my friend Neysa at Trailer Country LLC (www.trailercountryllc.com) She knows sells several brands, does custom orders, will give you great advice, is very active in the horse world and won’t steer you wrong. And she is only 3 hours away from you.
I can PM you her number.
The Lakota brand trailers have some nice option. Beautiful living quarters too. I have seen they make a LQ with a stock trailer option. Not sure how tall they make the stock trailer option, however they have full dividers so you could have all of your show necessities in one area and your big guy could have basically a whole stall area to himself. The prices are reasonable too. I am looking at one of those for myself but a slant load option I only wish I had a horse that was too big for slant load… maybe one day…
I have a big 17H TB and my friend has a 16.3 Canadian WB and hey both fit in my Homesteader trailer. Its quite big and roomy. I only have the two horse with a tack room (tack room would fit a twin mattress) but they make other trailers as well. Both horses have plenty of room all around and are comfortable. Super light trailer, stays cool with the carbon roof. I believe I have the “Stallion” model.
