Our working student moved to the United States as a high school junior, to ride, learn English, and get an American education. She lives on site, in the home of the barn owner. She is now a college sophomore and is a spectacular young rider who has been a family member and assistant trainer for four years in our barn. We all absolutely love her. She finally bought her own horse this weekend. She has full access to all of the barn equipment, tack, facilities and supplies. And suffice it to say that we have everything, and then some. Yet I would love to get her something special to welcome her new horse ($75 or so). Any ideas (other than saddle pads; we have dozens with the barn logo and all use that at shows)? Thanks!
I think a nice quality leather halter with the horse’s name would be perfect
And you can’t go wrong throwing in a few bags of horse treats!
A subscription (in the name of her horse) to Practical Horseman or The Chronicle
Leather halter with the horse’s name (assuming she doesn’t already have one) Or engraved stall plate for the horse
Ooh…I like adultammylife’s suggestion of a stall plate. Those can be really, really nice!
I think anything personalized with the horse’s name would probably make a great gift.
Nice leather halter with nameplate. Gift certificate to tack store (local, online, or one that goes to shows) for those inevitable items that you will need. If she is going to be showing the horse and needs to cover show expenses, could you do a gift certificate for that somehow?
I agree. I was given this by two friends when I got my first horse. It meant the world to me and I still have it hanging on my wall. It was very useful, and a wonderful way to remember him (and my friends) after we parted ways.
Halter with nameplate and lead with same, from Quillen’s!
And of course… a baby shower. We have baby showers quite regularly at my horsey office, and they are rarely for humans. Puppies, new horses, foals… any excuse for cake, party hats, and cute gifts gets acted upon!
How kind you are to help make her horse ownership marked and special.
Definitely have a party with cake. A leather halter with a nameplate sounds perfect. Having a party and making it a celebration might be as important as anything else.
Even though she has access to all the barn stuff, sometimes it’s nice to have stuff that’s just Yours, so you could consider some of those things too, or the gift certificate.
Nice personalized grooming brushes would be on my list, too.
