Horse with no "common sense" - can anything be done?

Maybe think of this problem > (not able to go back out through curtains) like Temple Grandin would. Going in through the curtains presents a ‘visual’ that mare is okay with, but going back out presents a visual that mare is not okay with. It seems obvious that there is ‘something’ different with the in/out that needs to be discovered. Just a thought.

That’s all fine and good, but if she can’t figure it out after 500 repetitions, there’s something else not clicking.

If she’s SEEING something or feeling something (whatever the adverse stimulis is from her point of view) that prevents her from going through on her own, then 1000 repititions isn’t going to solve it.

Maybe. Maybe she enjoys getting shocked by the fence, too.

Your original question was: “So. Are there exercises to help horses work through problems alone?” Karen Rohlf – Dressage Naturally – does have exercises you can try. Worth looking at.

This is literally my BIGGEST pet peeve with horses. I cannot own a horse who is idiotically herd bound. Some calling or light pacing? I’ll live with it. But that full on, lost my mind, screaming behavior…. Ugh. The worst.

Luckily for me it appears the more equines you own the less likely this behavior develops…. A good excuse for getting more horses!

In the case of this horse, this tantrum was related to the other horse, but she has the same reaction to lots of things in life. Not thinking, just reacting.
