“ Is it legal to threaten?” Yes. Is it likely they will follow through on having their legal counsel contact you? Maybe.
Is it likely they will actually sue you over a bad review? Doubtful. It’s expensive to file a lawsuit and they would have to prove that you were costing them business (affecting them financially) in order to get anywhere in a court of law.
Review are opinions. As long as you are not on a campaign of maliciously posting falsehoods about their business and just posting your own experiences with them, It’s not going to be worth their while to try and go after you for it.
Not a lawyer, just my two cents.
It’s almost always legal to threaten legal counsel. It’s only slander/libel/defamation if what you’re saying isn’t true. I would be tempted to cut and paste their email and add it to my review.
Is this the same person/barn you posted about on another thread today ?
This is absolutely typical of the wild wild world of online reviews.
There is no law against threatening legal action over anything. Typically such things progress in this way:
Irate individual threatens to sue
Target person ignores
Irate person hires lawyer to write a threatening letter (lawyers will often agree to do this even if the case is a long shot and they don’t recommend actually following through
Target person ignores or sends brief response saying bring it on. Generally at this point target person consults a lawyer.
Irate persons lawyer escalates to more threatening letters. Eventually if they have a real case they may file a lawsuit for damages.
But bear in mind to even get to this step is $20 to $30k in legal fees. And if the claims are true, they don’t have a case.
In the case of online reviews, the irate person can also contact the online host site, or flood the site with fake 4 star reviews. Online reviews are very very sketchy for this reason.
Edit: We updated our post as the false claims were removed.
As discussed previously, we don’t mind public reviews of our barn, but do mind false claims.
We hope everyone has a wonderful weekend and happy riding!
Best,
The Stables at Wulf Crest Farm
Well, I guess then since you’re claiming libel/slander you too need to name yourself, as well as any individual that may be running your operations.
As far as I understand it Tom Navarro’s criminal
Conviction for sexual acts/assault of a minor is public record. And it sounds like he has some connection to Wulf Crest.
You know what else is against forum rules?
Doxxing users.
Yet here you are… doxxing someone because you are upset about the review she gave your facility.
@Moderator_1 - again, this account for Wulf Crest Stables has explicitly named a forum user (NoVAMOM) which is contrary to COTH community guidelines.
Oh well. Just another thing for local people to be aware of when it comes to potentially doing business with this farm. Caveat emptor.
Hi (Redacted) / NoVAMOM,
We were initially planning to ignore your post here but we’ve had a few friends of the barn bring this to our attention now, so unfortunately we can no longer remain silent on the issue.
We thought we had resolved this privately when you originally posted false claims about animal abuse and a sex offender running our operation elsewhere, but clearly we were mistaken. Your claims are factually false and reckless. As discussed previously, we don’t mind public reviews of our barn, but please correct your statements to remove the false claims.
If you did suspect animal abuse and weren’t making a false claim in an effort to slander our barn in retaliation for us politely mentioning that we were unable to accommodate your request to join a group lesson at a specific time, you would have gone straight to local law enforcement to file a police report instead of only posting on public forums. We do encourage you to file that police report. Just a heads up that filing a false report or making false claims in the State of Virginia is considered a Class 1 Misdemeanor.
Additionally, per The Chronicle of the Horse forum rules:
“Users may provide their positive or negative experiences with or opinions of companies, products, individuals, etc.; however, accounts involving allegations of criminal behavior against named individuals or companies MUST be first-hand accounts and may NOT be made anonymously.”
and
“If a situation has been reported upon by a reputable news source or addressed by law enforcement or the legal system it is open for discussion, but if an individual wants to make their own claims of criminal behavior against a named party in the course of that discussion, they too must identify themselves by first and last name and the account must be first-person. ”

For posterity:
Wow.
Luis worked for Tom at River Chase for years, but when Wulf Crest opened, the initial claim was that Luis was managing it. Apparently he still works for Tom at River Chase in some capacity though. Sarah worked directly for Tom as a trainer at River Chase, in spite of his lifetime Safe Sport ban, but when Wulf Crest opened in 2021 (I think it was 2021?) she apparently assumed the role of head trainer there.
The two facilities clearly have close ties… and overlap. When WCF first opened, it was rumored Tom was actually running it, but they were all keeping it on the down low because of the SafeSport ban. But… I have yet to see definitive proof that he is running it. All of the public information concerning who exactly is running Wulf Crest is a bit vague…
As of last August, River Chase (again… run by Tom Navarro… who has been lifetime banned by SafeSport) publicly posted about attending a jumper show at Wulf Crest Stables and taking students there. Apparently they welcome him there. Again… he has a record related to sodomy of a minor. Hence the lifetime SafeSport ban.
It is what it is.
So glad you quoted this for posterity. It seems that @WCFStables deleted their comment from the other thread currently discussing the same issue. They made a note that the issue “had been resolved privately.”
Uhhhh… they came on the forums and doxxed a user. That’s not what a private resolution looks like.
Thanks for quoting for posterity. I know horse people aren’t known for their business savvy, but this is just astonishingly disgusting. Wow is right. (Also, the irony of WCF quoting for posterity and then editing is just too much…)
