Horses for Heroes/Wounded Warriors

Do any of you know of any of these programs in Georgia? When I was in Alabama one of the local therapeutic riding centers said they were going to start one, but that has been at least a couple of years ago and they have not done it yet.

Now in Atlanta, there is supposed to be one near me, but I cannot get in touch with the person who supposedly runs it, and another local horse person just told me it may not be active anymore.

It is so sad that such programs cannot get funded, or keep their funding, or accreditation. Surely it cannot be for lack of interest!

So I just thought I’d post here to see if any of you COTHers know of any programs.

Thanks

Sam Rhodes in Fort Benning would be your best contact.

I only personally know of programs in VA and WA. Both are outstanding programs and both are on military bases. It would be amazing if more independent trainers would look into setting up programs. If they could get the Veteran’s administration to fund even part of it, it could be a win/win.

Horses for Heroes

PATH International (therapeutic riding) has a search feature on their web site for their program Equine Services for Heroes (the Horses for Heroes name is actually mired in trademark infringement issues, so they changed the name) but in looking for Georgia, they do not show any. However, I know the list is out of date, so I would recommend a quick phone call to PATH (800) 369-RIDE (7433), Kaye Marks can help you with this one, and she can find the nearest center for you.

We ourselves are working to increase interest and awareness of these special programs and we would invite you to our website on our new TV series in the works.

Our soldiers and veterans deserve all the assistance they can get, and we are doing our part to give more visibility to these programs. Hope this information helps you find a center in Georgia.

Thank you all very much. I will follow up on your recommendations.

Chastain Therapeutic Riding in Buckhead has a Wounded Warriors program. http://www.chastainhorsepark.org/

Chastain Park has just changed hands.

They no longer have the Wounded Warriors program and neither does Huntcliff, as far as I can tell. I contacted a man who supposedy has one not too far away and he referred me to the program’s web site but there is nothing there about volunteering and when I contacted the site I just got info about fundraising.

I don’t have money, people, just plenty of time and desire to help!
