HorseTech High Point Grass vs. TC 30?

I’ve seen a ton of recommendations for HorseTech High Point Grass supplement on here lately. I was wondering - could that replace a ration balancer or would the protein content be insufficient?

If it’s too low in protein, would adding Nutramino help boost that?

Apples and oranges. So no, it’s really not a 1:1 replacement for a RB. But if you add Nutramino/Tri-Amino it does come pretty close, minus the calories. I used it for quite a few years with added N/T-A (and added cu/zn) for a horse who needed as few added calories as possible.

It depends on your forage. Do you test your hay and track how much your horse eats every day? Here is a good article to start with:

@Palm Beach - I do weigh my horse’s hay, but because the barn where I board gets new loads of hay every couple of months, testing hasn’t really been an option because it changes relatively frequently.

@JB - So it could function like a v/m supplement if not fully replacing protein/calories?

If your horse is an easy keeper, another option would be TC Lite.

Exactly

And know that even the minimal amount (1lb per 500lb) of TC Lite will be more calories than what most horses have for a ration balancer, which is usually about 1lb.

@Palm Beach @JB : Thank you! I had him on TC Lite for about six months last year and really liked it, until he choked repeatedly on it. Dry, completely soaked to mush, didn’t matter. We’ve since switched him to a couple of pounds of TC Senior + v/m supplement, and that seems to be working well. knock on wood no more choking.

He is a relatively easy keeper, so I’m just starting to think about what other options might be if I need to switch things up once he’s back on pasture in the spring/summer.

Great article, thanks for posting!

Hopefully folks will take a few moments to read it. It took me less than three minutes. – it isn’t time consuming and is easy to understand as are most of the other KER articles I have read:)

KER is a good source, as long as you recognize that some of their “studies” involve very small population samples, and they will always try to sell you a product at the end!
