Horseware Blanket LIners

The only thing I would change, if I could, is I would make the different weight liners different colors or have the weight embroidered somewhere on the front so it’s easy to see. I like them but it would be nice to have some very visible way to know if I am grabbing the 100gr or the 300gr without looking for the little inner tag

I recently purchased some HW 100g liners and am kind of like, “why didn’t I do this sooner?”

Yes, there is an inconvenience factor, especially if barn staff is having to handle the changes. But if you are the only one doing the blanket changes, that inconvenience factor is offset by the price savings.

I’m impressed how the liners fit so seamlessly with the HW blankets. Problems I had with previous liners, like too much bulk, bad fit with the blanket, and shifting are non-existent.

I bought some tags at Walmart and attached them to the front velcro part and just labeled them with which weight they were so its easy to see. And fortunately, HW seems to be labeling all the blankets with the weight if you look by the small size label. But I agree - different colors would be nice! How about a blue, hunter green, maroon and black???

It sounds like all of you using the liners are fairly satisfied with the system.

A question: Rambo sizing vs. Rhino/Amigo sizing. Since the Rambos tend to run a size larger (my 75 horse in all brands takes a 72 in Rambos), how do the Horseware liners run? Let’s say you’re buying a liner for a size 72" Rambo sheet. Do you buy the 72" Horseware liner or a 75"?

I buy the same size liner. You don’t want to go bigger with the liner as you want it to be covered by the outer waterproof sheet/blanket (anything that hangs out will wick up moisture).

Yes, I get that. I don’t think my question was very clear. What I’m asking is are the Horseware liners sized to fit the Rambo line or the Rhino/Amigo line? In my experience, a horse wears one size in the Rambos and the next size up in Rhinos/Amigos.

My horse wears the same size in the Amigo and Rambo blankets. So I can’t really comment on that. That’s kind of odd and I’m not sure what I’d do about the liner in that case. I’d probably buy the size to match the Amigo and see if it is also OK for the Rambo.

Also, I use the liners with my old and original style Rambo blankets and they work well. I attach the back snaps to where the tail strap rings are, and attach nothing at the front. It stays just fine and doesn’t shift.

i have one horse that is a 78 and one that is a 75 and when in a pinch have had no problem using the size 75 liner under a 78 blanket. so size wise i think within 1 size below (wouldnt go bigger, for reasons stated above) i think you are ok as far as all the attachments will still line up fine etc

I think the sizing descrepancy is more pronounced if your horse falls between sizes.

I have a one horse who a 78" Amigo is a hair big on her, but she swims in a 78" Rambo. Yet when I downsize, the 75" Rambo fits perfectly, while the 75" Amigo is a hair snug.

I went with the 75" liner, though. It fits fine.

The other horses are more true to their size, so while the Rambos are a little roomier, they use the same size in all Horseware products.

I have never noted a size difference between the Amigo/Rhino/Rambo and I probably own/have owned 40 or more of them over the years? My horses are all over the map size wise. The pony is a 69, the TB a 78, one WB is an 81, and two WBS are 87 though one is a long 87 and one is a wide 87. All take that size in every blanket aside from the Optimo. The drop is shorter in the Rhino but the lengths always always measure true? Excluding the optimo line, anyway.

Given that drop is really not an issue with the liners so I would go by the length measurement that your horse actually measures

I haven’t had that many of them, but have used them over the past 10 years or so. It’s been noticeable in every horse I’ve had. My 84" Amigo girl is most definitely an 81" Rambo. My 75" Amigo/Weatherbeeta boy fits perfectly in 72" Rambos. My old fellas that are now deceased were the same (and the same sizes, actually). I used Rhinos some for them, and they used the 3" larger size (or 2", depending on the brand) in the Rhinos/Centau/Pessoa/Weatherbeeta/Bucas/Dover lines than they did in the Rambos.

Go figure.

I don’t find that they are any different in sizing as far as length (chest to tail or wither to tail), and I’ve owned them all (Rambo, Rhino, Amigo). The only difference I have found is sometimes the Rhino and Amigo seem to be cut a little shorter in the drop (side to side) than the Rambo. Now I have at times had to go up a size when going from a regular cut to the wug (high neck) cut on particular horses where they needed the extra room in the shoulder, but otherwise, my past and present horses have all gone in the same size Rambo, Rhino, or Amigo. I’ve put the same Horseware liners under Rambo and Rhino blankets of the same size and had no issues.

I find changing the liners easier than changing a whole blanket. I use then under Weatherbeeta Detach a Necks so I don’t use the Velcro at the shoulder. It never shifts in front. I removed the WB leg straps and put on a baling twine tail strap. Removing the liner means unclipping the tail snaps, reaching under the chest and unstrapping the chest Velcro and pulling the whole thing out from underneath from one hindquarter. Done. Putting it back on I undo the belly surcingles and chest and fold the blanket forward up to the wither. Put on the liner, attach at the chest and tail clips and unfold and reclip the top blanket. Since the neck Velcro is the most labor intensive part of removing a Detach a Neck, it’s way easier to not pull the entire blanket off.

Just so you don’t think you’re the only one - I find Rambo to run a size larger too

And I believe there are many of us. Several threads even here on the forums over the years that reference it.

My horse fits a 78" in both Rhino and the Rambo liners. Tbh if I was buying another Rhino, he may need to go into an 81" because it’s looking just a little bit small on him these days. He has some 78" Amigos (two copies of the exact same blanket…) which fit him completely differently. One fits better than the other, and in one his neck is swimming in the neck rug but his cheeks poke out the back! If I was buying him another Amigo I’d have to get an 81". The 78" liner fits him perfectly. You don’t want any parts of it sticking out from underneath the turnout blanket.

Mine wears the same size in Amigo and Rambo, but his bum fits a little bit better into the 84 Amigo than the 81, and I use the 84 Amigo more often with liners since it’s a 100g blanket. That said, I have an 84 100g liner that I will sometimes put into the 81 Rambo medium, and I have no issues. It does not hang out the back. The only thing is that there is some slack where the rear snaps clip on, like the tail rings sit a little higher than when it’s clipped into the 84. But even though it fits longer on the sides in the back, there’s no exposed liner anywhere. I actually don’t mind that it’s a little big because the 84 liners seem to fit better in the chest than the 200g 81 liner I have. (So, I create 300g total fill more often with the 84 liner 81 blanket combo than the other way around because the fit is better that way). I also have a 300g in size 84 but that has always been in the 84 Amigo blanket because it hasn’t been cold enough to use it in the Rambo. Fits just fine. For this much fill, I prefer using the 84 rather than what I did last year with the 200g liner in the 200g or 250g blanket (250 was an Amigo that has since lost a surcingle and is out of rotation), both size 81.

TL;DR - I’d buy the liner for the largest size blanket you’d use it in, assuming no more than one size difference.

Thanks for the advice! Helpful info!

Just to add to the confusion, it seems to me that blanket sizing has changed over the years. When I got my current horse 14 years ago, I bought his blanket wardrobe - all size 78" Weatherbeeta. I initially bought an 81" Rhino, but it was way too big. I got a great deal on the WBs, so that’s what I ended up getting.

Fast forward a decade, and the WBs were wearing out. I ordered a 78" Rhino, and guess what - too small. I ended up getting an 81". My old QH wore a 75" Rhino for ages. Now he wears a 78". I wonder if the blanket manufacturers changed their sizing so more horses would wear “big” sizes. We all know people who like to tell everyone how big their horse is.
