Horsey fiction for adults

After reading this thread I purchased In and Out on Amazon for a very, very good price and am totally enjoying it! Gallop Girl was a great read and I’ve read it a number of times. Even though Kate Lattey’s books are not adulty type books they are really good. Kim Ablon Whitney’s “Circuit” books are great as well. This thread has been really great because it brought readers to read some well written books and the authors get the recognition they deserve! Hopefully soon my book will be finished and I’ll find my name on a thread like this soon!

Not show world- but I bought Crying with Cockroaches at a fundraiser for a handicapped riding center and reall enjoyed it.

Horse Heaven by Jane Smiley, may have been already mentioned. Not a quick read, but a good one.

A couple of other good authors that even though the books aren’t “adultey” types are worth mentioning…
Maggie Dana
Claire Svendsen (Show Jumping Dreams series)
Toni Leland Kovak & Quaid books

I love this, so many great ideas! Thanks!

That looks similar to another book that I read a few years ago and really enjoyed, titled, “Riding Into the Wind.”

“Fall,” by Kai Maristed. A-circuit horse show novel. Beautifully written. Inspired by the Tommy Burns insurance scandal from the late 80s/90s…
I forgot about this one. I used to recommend it a lot.

I wrote my horsey fiction with adults in mind. The two main characters are in their early 20s.

The Dressage Chronicles is another good choice.

Gallop Girl was a fun read

I am reading Fool’s Fortune now and enjoying it, although it is more of an young adult read.

I HIGHLY recommend In & Out: Year One in the Jumping for Gold Series by Barbara Moss. It’s like a soap opera centered around a Grand Prix rider. Lots of juicy scenes and accurate horse dialogue. I’m so sad she hasn’t written the next one yet.
But if she does write a second one, please God may the manuscript first visit an editor and a professional proofreader. I was ready to stick needles in my eyes.

I also really loved all of Kim Ablon Whitney’s books, The Dressage Chronicles and Ambition. I just finished Eventer’s Dream (because of this thread), it was so funny I laughed out loud, so thanks for that recommendation! I just started the sequel.

Box of Chocolates: Is there a sequel (or will there be) to Gallop Girl?

Just finished George’s autobiography - it was great! Sometimes truth IS stranger than fiction!

Chillydc, the plan was to have a sequel out later this year. But then life got in the way. Specifically the horse I bought that was supposed to reintroduce me to the joys of competing arrived in the U.S. with a severe case of pleuropneumonia. The past seven months have been a rollercoaster ride I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy. So my writing has taken backseat for now. Hopefully I can get back to work on that sequel soon.

I agree, I really loved it. It was really interesting and I loved all the little personal stories which often include “we can laugh about it now”! lol

Ditto Laura Crum for getting the details right.

Jane Smiley’s Horse Heaven is one of my favorites.
Mine, too. Was going to suggest this one if no one else had. I have read it over and over.

It’s old now (and mentioned upthread on p. 3), but Anne McCafferey (who largely wrote YA SciFi stuff-- Dragonriders of Pern, etc.) wrote a novel called The Lady set on a horse farm in Ireland. Follows the farm’s owning family, collapse of their marriage, new love interest, children coming of age, etc. all on a backdrop of hunting and horse showing. It’s a lovely picture of what I imagine life on an Irish farm to be (plus a little extramarital canoodling that the reader blissfully forgives because, you know, the woman being cheated on is rather beastly).

The new Jilly Cooper book, Mount, is out! I’m loving it so far!

I just saw this thread - love it! In addition to extending my reading list quite a bit, I would also recommend “The Dressage Chronicles” (1 & 2) by Karen McGoldrick. Pretty funny and good descriptions from the rider’s perspective. Also, I love “Horseplay” by Judy Renee Singer. I use this as a gift for other riders!
