Horsey fiction for adults

Just finished “Stake Night” bynSusan Archer
http://www.amazon.com/Stake-Night-Susan-Archer-ebook/dp/B01C912YKQ

The book itself is not a work of art, but I was enthralled with it because it covers a year in the high dollar world of gaited horses.

The trainers and owners are very predictable, but I loved reading a ‘behind the scenes’ look into another discipline.

I wish there were novels written about the show circuit of reiners, etc. Does anyone know of any?

Recommend it highly – you can’t beat it for the price.

I too am reading “In and Out” - very trashy but I love it.

I also loved Jane Smiley’s A Thousand Acres. She won a prize for this novel.

Loved the $80 Champion. Fortunes Fool is good. Is Kim Ablon Whitney the author of the pony jumper books set in New Zealand? I liked them a lot, can’t wait for the next one.
I also like the series with the dressage rider and her cowboy reining horse boyfriend, don’t remember the name.

Doctracy - that’s kate lattey who does the pony jumper ones! I LOVE those books!

Oh! I know that series w/ the dressage rider and her cowboy bf, but totally can’t remember the name either! Those are pretty good!

Jilly Cooper, start with Riders, then Polo, etc… Trashy excellence.

I just finished Margaret Fletcher Gallop Girl based on this thread and it was great, highly recommend!

A couple of adult books with a more literary inclination:

The Hearts of Horses by Molly Gloss

and

Finding My Distance by Julia Wendell

Slightly less trashy but almost are Fiona Walker’s books - they’re not all super horsey, but a few are, and most have some horses in them somewhere!

Was that the “Dancing with Horses” series by Toni Mari?

I wrote my horsey fiction with adults in mind. The two main characters are in their early 20s.

The Dressage Chronicles is another good choice.

I LOVED this book (Margaret Fletcher) and recommended it to many friends- thanks so much for a great, FUN read!

Thanks Happytalk.

I’ve got two in the works. One from the viewpoint of her daughter, called “Whoa Nellie.” And the other from Nattie’s view as a woman of a certain age. Don’t have a title yet for that. When I get a few more chapters written, I’d love to get some feedback. So if anyone’s interested, please email me at Jmuncie@aol.com and put “Nattie Reader” in the message. Happy trails!
Such good news! I really loved all three Nattie Gold books, and Shenandoah Summer – and the fangirl squealing that went on when you first ordered saddle soap from me – well, let’s just day that DH didn’t understand!

I lost all of my copies in the divorce – ex-DH liked them too (he was an ex-newspaperman and loved that aspect as well as the mysteries) and apparently when he divided up books, he chose to keep them. I do wish they were available as e-books, but this will inspire me to go and find copies.

Waiting eagerly for the new ones, and also glad to hear about the sequel to Ambition

And to everyone else – thanks for the recommendations! My to-read list is at about 95 e-books and the stacks of hard copies awaiting attention are becoming dangerous. But, somehow, I just can’t resist adding more!

Libby

Thank you chillydc & JazCreekInc for the kind words. It’s much appreciated!

Although I like Horse Heaven, do NOT under any circumstances read Jane Smiley’s Barn Blind. Very well written, but dark, dark, dark. Not even heartbreaking. More like devastating.

I enjoyed Kim Ablon Whitney’s books, and I’m off to check out some of the others mentioned in this thread.
I LOVE BARN BLIND

OK. Went to the library today and they had Barbara Moss’ “In and Out.” Picked it up based on reading this thread. It’s 2:40 AM and I. Can’t. Put. It. Down. Damn you, CoTH!! Talk about a guilty pleasure.

At least tomorrow is Sunday! Though I am supposed to go ride at 9:30…

Yes! I really liked that series. It’s another young adult series but I found it a good read.

“Fall,” by Kai Maristed. A-circuit horse show novel. Beautifully written. Inspired by the Tommy Burns insurance scandal from the late 80s/90s…
