Horsie things you can never find but have a need for

This may seem off the wall, but here goes.

My good friend is a welder. Not just your average welder, he is a metal fabricator for million dollar car restorations.

He is super talented and has that mind that can think of an idea and make it.

So he is just going into business for himself and has a list of stuff he’d like to make in his spare time to always have on hand to sell. One is furniture. I told him that horse people are always looking for quality stuff and many are willing to pay a premium for something that lasts.

Can you throw out your ideas of things that he could explore?
I told him:

Metal art plasma cut, signs, designs with horses.

Our high school shop department can’t keep with the orders for that.

Horseshoe art, from 6’ cactus to coffee tables to any and all other, hoofpicks and stuff like this our farrier made me for Christmas, what a nice present.

Love horseshoe art and laser signs.

The company who made my horse stalls does laser cut outs for the stall doors. They are so pretty. They also make furniture, bed frames, lamps, fireplace doors and entry gates for your farm. They do some beautiful work.

Saddle and bridle racks, larger size sculpture for the yard

If he could find a good balance of prices ranges. There is always a lot in the expensive range but little in the moderate to less expensive.

Personally, I would love to find something round or at least half-moon shaped with a hole in the center that I can slide over the bridle hanger hooks in my trailer that can help protect the curve of my halters, bridles etc instead of having a sharp fold in them. Right now I’ve got a couple re-purposed cat food cans that I punched a hole through the middle of in there, but would like something a bit more “stylish”. Could your friend do something like this?

“Horsie things you can never find but have a need for”

A winning lottery ticket.

If he wants to design something, how about a saddle rack/tack box that fits in a car trunk.

There are some one the market. I like the Rolltack portable one ($299 ouch). But I think it would be too heavy. I would probably have to take all my stuff out just to put it in the trunk.

Maybe you could make a wooden one that stays in the car.

  • Tack trunks

my god a tack trunk is heavy enough with out making it out of steel plate… how about a tack truck dolly instead to haul those heavy thing around at shows?

Ornamental steel barn doors might be a better bet

Yes, this! I was the last one to move into current barn, so I got the bridle hooks. They’re fine, but if I could find something to place over them, I’d be in heaven!

Former friend’s DH made me handles for my barn sliding doors from aluminum tubing.
They are about 1.5" diameter & about 2’ long & being rounded, easy on the hands.
He bent & flattened a portion at each end & screwed them into the big sliders - 12’X16’ - into the horizontal bracing and they make moving the doors sooooooo much easier than the narrow metal handles that are standard.

I had a fabulous metal bottle opener in the shape of a horse. It was admired by many and so handy to have in the grooming box for a cold one after riding. Sadly it got stolen along with my grooming tote when my truck was broken into and I have never been able to find another. Priced right I think these would be a quick turnover for your friend OP.

the one barn i worked at had little metal L brackets with a ring that fit over the walls of portable stabling to hang water buckets from so we didn’t have to fiddle with endless amounts of twine loops - not glamorous but much appreciated by the staff

sounds interesting, was it similar to this?

Tack hooks. Something a little more elegant than the ones you buy at the tack store. I saw one in iron that was lovely.

Did you see the horseshoe Christmas tree? I think it has 4 shoes on the bottom, then 3, 2, 1 to the top. The base is a 4 shoes welded together, with one more shoe as the trunk. The shoes face down and each one had an ornament hanging from it. I would buy one. I’ll see if I can find a photo. It showed up on my Facebook feed around the holidays.

That wasn’t hard. Looks like there are lots of variations on the theme. About halfway down the page.

Similar yes. How cool I’ve never been able to find one remotely similar so thanks for that. Mine was the shape of a horse’s hind leg and had lots of detail like muscleling and the hint of a tail. The hoof was the bottle opening part. The whole thing fitted in my hand just nicely although I appreciate there is no real skill involved in opening bottles nor a real need for luxury tools to do the job:winkgrin:

Not elegant but in the plumbing dept of a Home Depot you can easily find small sections of large pvc pipe that fit over your small tack hooks to eliminate the small curve problem.

Hijack!
That tree is really nice & the rest of the stuff seems reasonably priced…
But can anyone explain/justify the Custom Underarmour shoes for $5100

Or maybe a metal/wood trunk, with the frame being metal. If you have it on wheels I don’t think it would be that bad. I’ve actually been thinking about making something similar. A saddle rack with wheels could also be cool.

how about that rocker attachment for the self-righting jump? The thing that if your horse hits and ‘knocks it down’ it just rolls right back up? that would be a lifesaver for those of use riding alone at home…

I had specially made hay racks made because racks that fit into a fence line and hold more than a bale of hay simply do not exist. My trainer designed hers and had them made 20 years ago, and I copied her.
