Horze Breeches sizing, am I that fat?

I get ads for Horze.com all the time on my facebook and sometimes they seems to have cute things. However, whenever I look at a specific pair they usually seem to only go up to a US 32. Am I reading their sizing wrong ? Do most of their breeches only go up to a US 8/10 ? I’m a pretty solid 34 which is pretty easy to find at most stores (SmartPak, Dover, etc). They don’t even have an option to search for XL.

This isn’t a commentary on healthy weight or obesity, I just wasn’t sure if I was understanding the sizes.

I take a size 32  and IME it’s pretty common for that to be the largest size in a line of breeches or of jeans. And that isn’t always a big enough 32 either.

Horze usually goes up to size 34 in most models and 36 in a smaller selection. I find they will often just not show sizes anymore if they aren’t in stock on their website. And some of our local retailers just plain don’t bring in anything bigger than a 32 which is frustrating as hell. We aren’t all sticks in the riding world!

That said a lot of the Horze modes with polyamide and elastane are quite generous in their fit. I can go a size down in the Grand Prix from my normal size in other brands.

I wear an EU 40 and in a lot of their breeches have to also go down a size.

Agree. I’m a 34 in most US brands and a 32 in Horze/B Vertigo fits me well. The sizing is on the generous side.

No you’re not fat, people now a days look at a 34” as fat.

No you aren’t. Horze 32 probably is the same as a 34, FYI. I wear a size 26 when I usually take a 28. If you buy their synthetic materials it stretches amply.

Hm. I thought they had a decent size range, but perhaps I never looked close enough. I’m a size 8 in US jeans/pants, a size 28 or 30 if I want a looser fit in US, and a size 40 EU (42 in Pikeur though). I only have the Horze Grand Prix but recently ordered another breech from them that isn’t here yet. The Grand Prix fit true to size I think. I got a 40 and it wasn’t too big or small. Maybe with a more high rise breech you can size down as they actually sit on your waist and not hip…if that makes sense.

Many brands do stop at 32. I’m tall and have wide hips and need 34 even when fit and at a normal weight, 36 at other times. Things that would fit my waist just fine sometimes don’t work because they will not come over my hips. I usually end up buying riding tights which tend to have more stretch to them, but even in those I usually need the largest size and have to try them on because not every brand or style works.

This popped up on my suggested topics. So I know it’s old. But I wanted to point out that I bought some B Vertigo breeches. The label says German 44 British 18 USA 32. All good. But the Rideway website has German 44 British 18 USA 33. And then British 16 is USA 31.5.

So it’s possible the German 44 are actually a bit bigger than 32.

But not really up to 34.

Horze breech sizing doesn’t reflect any other brand I’ve encountered. They are HUGE on me. Even when I ordered a size down, I sent them back because they were still too big. The fabric in particular was very stretchy and forgiving, so I think that plays into sizing along with the cuts.

You’re reading it right. They do have a few styles up to 36, and one or two allegedly up to 40, but I’ve never been able to find 38/40 available anywhere.

It’s too bad, because with the average American adult female now a size 16, they are missing out on a significant segment of the market.

Women’s clothing sizing is a joke, equestrian and street alike.

Sure, breeches are supposed to be better than street clothes and a 34 is supposed to mean 34", but when one pair from one brand is too big in the waist, and another pair of the same size in a different brand I can’t even button closed…
Or even better, two pairs of the same size and same brand, but different “styles,” and they fit completely different; well, obviously the numbers don’t actually mean inches in any logical sense.

Just buy what fits, the numbers mean absolutely nothing, don’t let it make you feel any kind of way at all.

I don’t have any experience with Horze specifically.

I hate clothes sizing. I am a street 16 or 18 (in some brands). I wear a 40 in Smart Pack although I could squeeze into a 38. In Dover Wellesley, I wear a 38. Most of the European brands don’t include plus sizes, at least in the U.S. I’ve checked out a few British tack sites, which seem to have more extended sizing than in the U.S. I know the 38 and 40, etc are supposed to be analogous to waist sizes, but I’m above a 40" waist, but yet 16s often fit and in equestrian sizing, I’ll fit in a 38 sometimes. You just can’t go by the sizing charts, yet the manufacturers want you to.

The same goes for calf sizes in boots. I have a 16.5" calf, approximately, but Ariats wide calf I still can’t get zipped up. Sigh. I guess I’m going to have to go custom for boots.

Just another note to size down in Horze! I ordered a size down from my usual breech size and found the waist fit but everything else was still too big.

Breeches sizing is just as bad as all other women’s sizing. I have jeans in a 16 from Old Navy, jeans from Loft in a 33, shorts from Loft in a 16, Piper breeches in a 38, Kerrits in an XL and Irideon breeches in a 34. I just try to buy from places where I can send the damn things back for free, or return them super easily at a retail storefront. I have Piper lined breeches in a 38 and Piper mid-rise full seats in a 38. The full seats are a little tight but loosen up, and the lined Breeches are BIG.

@MrsFitzDarcy_amp_Feliks My right calf is a 16.5" and my foot is a size 6.5. I believe you can get Tredsteps in a size this wide, but they are harder to find. I found a pair of Ariats in an extra wide a few years ago that fit well on my right calf. I don’t know if you can still get an extra wide. They are the cheaper ones though (heritage?), and definitely not as nice as the ones I got 20 years ago.

I have a pair of jeans from the same company, same style, same size, just different colors. I even bought them in the same order, so it’s not like they were different years for that style or something. One pair is a bit tight and the other pair is too big around the waist by a good 1/2 inch. It’s totally ridiculous.

I think these days with everything manufactured overseas there is little quality control or oversight. Even in a pretty reputable store like Banana Republic the same pants in different colors can fit differently.

Some of the Ariat brand boots as does Ovation Boots come in an Extra Wide. Ariat XW is a bit more generous (also a bit wide at the top too) then the Ovation. I found a pair of Ariat Vortex XW on Ebay for half price but I also have a pair of Ovation Mirabella XW too.
