hound question - though not foxhounds

I live in rural Virginia where hunting deer with hounds is tradition. I am respectful of my neighbors that hunt and have had no problems with the hounds or the hunters. Hounds do occasionally run across my property and sometimes hang around. I always contact the club/owners as in most cases the dogs have collars with tags/names of club/contact numbers In fact the dogs often have tracking collars and I regularly see the owners/clubs out tracking the dogs.

A dog appeared today and unlike most she has no collar. She is also a blue merle/blue speckled with very large ears unlike most deer hounds I have come across, which are liver/brown and white. She also seems taller and has longer ears. In addition she has a very deep ‘Bay’ versus high pitched howl or keen I am used to with the deer hounds. She is very friendly and came to me enthusiastically tail wagging, vs most of the deerhounds, which are all very sweet but usually quite shy.

I contacted my neighbor who has a private pack and he said he would contact the local hunt clubs to see if anyone is missing a dog. But I am thinking she may be a coon hound rather than a deer hound? Any thoughts?

She is very sweet and I don’t want to take her to the local shelter (only one for 4 counties) except that if someone is looking for her that is where they would likely look first. I will give it a couple of days to see if my neighbor’s contacts are looking for a dog. Then I could take her to the shelter and leave my name in case no one has claimed her in the required time, or I could contact one of the rescues in the area. The local dog rescue won’t take dogs until they have gone to the shelter but they assured me that many rescue groups monitor and pull dogs. In this area, hounds are the most common breeds in shelters.

If she were a foxhunting hound from an organized pack, she’d have tattoos in the ears, might be worth a peek and if you see anything, your neighbor can likely decipher. On the whole, it seems like your plan is a sound one.

If she is blue tick with rather longer ears than a foxhound, they are usually wider as well as longer, and a deeper bay, you are probably right that she is a coonhound. If she is so friendly she probably is someone’s pet. I hope you find her people.

I’ve seen some people have very good luck posting to Facebook when they have lost or found a pet. If your friends will share with their friends…etc, your dog could find its owner very easily.

Best of luck.

Sounds like a Bluetick Coonhound. Where deer hunting with dogs is allowed it is now the season. So it could be that someone was out deer hunting and the hound wandered off.

For the record, about 10 years ago I found a hound on my property stuck on the fence. I thought it was a large tri-colored fox hound. I phoned the number on the collar and the man at the other end was ecstatic that I had his hound, a coon hound. The hound had been missing one week. He lived 30 miles away…so it’s possible you might want to really broaden the area where you let people know what you have found. Good luck!

There is a Facebook page “Lost & Found Dogs - Virginia” that is very good. Some localities have their own pages, as well.

If you are okay to hang on to her, I would suggest contacting your local shelter/Animal control and filing a Found Dog report. If, after the required 10 (I think) days, no one had come forward to claim, she is legally yours to do with as you please.

It could also be a catahoula - also a coonhound.

I was going to call the shelter today to see if anyone has reported a dog of this description missing and will also file a Found Dog report. My vet clinic also has a scanner so can check for a chip…

And yes SLW, that is my fear, we are a very rural county with lots of forest lands and she could have wandered quite far and no one around here would know her. Although I also feel like hound people might know a lot of the other hound people.

We had a deer hound hanging around our house a couple of years ago, but he was just SO skittish that you couldn’t put your hands on him. Luckily he had a collar with a name tag and had a radio collar.

I was working on getting him conditioned to us, feeding him, sitting around him…but then I had to go out of town. My husband left the back door open and in walked the hound…he was able to get his hands on him and called the number. The owner had hunted with him in November in far Western Buckingham county, he showed up at our place in Jan in far Eastern Powhatan county. The owner figured he was dead or someone else had taken him in. He was very glad to have him back.
