House breaking the unbearable dog!!!

This is so sad. That poor puppy. What in the world are you doing? If you want a dog, adopt an adult, older one who sleeps on the couch all day. I would have liked to get a puppy when we lost our 13-year-old big dog, but we are not home during the day! So we have found a lovely six-year-old who gets a run in the morning, sleeps with our 9-year-old corgi during the day, and then gets another run when we come home. I would NEVER have a puppy unless someone could always come home at lunch. You are being so unfair.

Wait, I missed the part where you don’t give her WATER?? WTF? Puppies (and all animals!) need water available to them 24.7. So you give your horse one bucket of water three times a day and that’s all?

You have no idea what you’re doing. PLEASE rehome this poor animal. You are instilling horrible behavior that will take a new owner at least six months to correct at this point.

Update: puppy was crated today, proving she can hold it… Walked her and she didn’t potty. Came back in, while getting my other dog she peed in the floor. Told her no went back outside with other dog. She watched him potty and get praises and then she went. Seems like being up during the day worked. She isn’t abused and she gets water more than 3 times a day. Read people… Seems like I’m on the right track. Guess we shall see tomorrow

This thread just sickens me. Poor puppy. I hope someday you work for someone who doesn’t allow you to potty for 8 whole hours just because you have been able to do it before. And if you can’t, I hope they withhold water. What in the world is wrong with people???

Yes, I think you’re on the right track. But don’t be too confident - a 4 month old puppy can sometimes hold their bladder for 6-8 hours. It may not always happen, and you need to expect accidents, because they will happen still at that age; they just can’t help it.

I would suggest keeping her out until she pees, even if it takes 30 minutes. Then praise praise praise.

You have to keep her outside until she DOES potty … that is the only way she is going to figure this out.

Everyone who is just “sickened” by the fact that dogs go 8 hours without going potty: THERE ARE PLENTY OF DOGS IN THE WORLD WITH OWNERS WHO ACTUALLY HAVE TO WORK FOR A LIVING AND THEY ARE JUST FINE!!!

Cut the drama, its not the end of the world.

Yes, but we are talking about a PUPPY here, not an adult dog.

Um. right back at ya drama pants. I don’t see people up in arms about an adult holding it 8 hours. If you think that it is ethical or fair to expect a PUPPY to hold it 8 hours without accident then yes, I think that is pretty sick.

OP I still think it is unfair to expect a puppy to hold it that long but I am glad that crating is helping.

I made it clear in my previous post that the OP shouldn’t expect the puppy to hold it, just realize that it may take longer for the puppy to become housebroken with long days in the house.

You are on the right path  However, you need to keep her outside until she pees. The fact she waited until she was inside to pee shows that she IS potty trained, just in reverse. You need to break the previous ‘training’ to pee inside by not giving her the opportunity. Don’t bring her in until she goes, and give a praise party when she does. Inside, keep her with you (as in leashed to your waist if you can’t be watching her like a hawk) to make sure she doesn’t get a chance to go inside.

you’re now leaving her in a tiny crate for 8 hours a day, with no breaks? that’s just utterly cruel. Tight prolonged confinement like that of a growing puppy dramatically increases the risk of the puppy developing unpleasant orthopedic conditions like hip dysplasia.

Many people do crate for half a day, then a break, then crate again, during housebreaking; which I think is a bad idea, but it’s more acceptable than all day long.

Plus most 4 month old puppies cannot consistently hold their bladders for 8 hours; and if you force your puppy to have accidents in a crate you can “break” their cleanliness instinct and have really serious troubles housebreaking after that.

And you’re still withholding water? that’s not only extremely cruel, it’s illegal. Knowingly withholding water is considered to be “willful neglect” and is a prosecutable crime.

While you are at work, for 8 hours, she doesn’t have water, right? Does she have water at night? Or is she spending 16 hours a day without access to water? Sorry, but I can’t get past that. She may get water more than 3 times per day, but if you are restricting her water and you are away for 8 hours, then that is a long time without water, and I think that you need to go over this schedule you have this puppy on with a vet. Not people on the Internet. Yes, lots of dogs go 8 hours without going to the bathroom, but most are older and they have water.

…Really?

My (adult) dogs all stay in the same large crate while I am at work and I don’t leave water in for them. They get water in their kibble when they are fed 2x per day, and have free access to a water bowl when I am home and they are out in the house. At night they are uncrated and spend the whole time with me upstairs, nobody leaves to go downstairs where the water bowl is unless the cat is up to no good. They almost never drink out of the bowl since apparently what they get with their kibble is enough. Even with two cats and three dogs, one medium sized bowl will last three or four days before it gets low. I like to feed them water with their kibble because then I know they are getting a certain amount on a certain schedule. Additional amounts they want to drink when they are out is fine with me, but they almost never do.

I was not aware this was animal abuse.

Then again, they are not puppies.

And that’s why people hire a dog walker during those times, or do what my parents did and suck it up - trade off who goes home to let the puppy (she was 6mos. old) out in the middle of the day). It was rough, but even as full time doctors they dealt with it.

Or do what I did and find an adult housebroken rescue dog.

Yup, there is no shortcut. Pupppies need owner to get home at least once during the work day or have dog walkers come at least once. Or have someone who stays home. We adopted a dog a couple of years ago and while she was over a year old and housebroken I would not have dreamed of leaving her crated all day, not just for pee and poop breaks but for exercise and fun. (We have cats, so needed the crate to start to ensure live cats. Furthermore, she was a chewer.) I had a dog walker. It wasn’t cheap but it was necessary.

Nobody makes the set rule about a puppy NEEDING to go out during the day.

As long as the OP realizes that the puppy is going to have accidents due to being left in the house, and potty training is going to take longer, fine.

Who died and left you all the be-all know-all about raising a puppy? I’m not telling you its wrong to go home during the day and let your puppy out, you shouldn’t be telling people its wrong to leave it in for 8 hours.

Its worked for years, people do work for a living and can’t always go home to let the dog out. Its a matter of preference and how often you would like to be responsible for the accidents and the longer time it takes to potty train.

Suckerforhorses I am not sure why this issue hits so close to home but it is more than a bit bizarre. The OP is at the end of her rope about the dog urinating in the house. As educated dog owners, we are telling her that if she doesn’t want to the to urinate in the house she cannot expect it to wait 8 hours. Leaving a puppy alone all day and accepting that it will urinate inside is not only disgusting and counterproductive for the animals training, it is also the entire reason for this thread. What you are suggesting is exactly what she is trying to fix. If the OP didn’t care that the dog was urinating in the house she never would have started this thread. We are providing potential solutions. What exactly are you trying to accomplish?
