I also suggested she crate the dog during the day, as many others have suggested on this thread - a potential solution.
There are many people saying its just “sickening” and that if she can’t come home to let the dog out its borderline abuse and not acceptable. If the OP can’t come home during the day, as many dog owners cannot do, then the OP needs to figure out a way to make it work without coming home during the day. This may mean crating the dog (not in a “tiny” crate, just one to contain the dog from using the entire kitchen as a bathroom) and accepting that there will be accidents and the process will take longer.
My point is that many dog owners can’t get home during the day, but that’s no reason to make the OP feel like the dog MUST have someone come during the day or she should give the dog away.
