House Smells Like Dog!

I wash all my dog-related sheets and dog covers in Tide and they still smell like dog. How do you wash “dog” out?

Any other house and dog ideas are welcome.

My house is completely overrun and I just inherited a second dog, an obese bloodhound, for some health rehab. Looking for help😂

I hate to say this, but I think it’s permanent. We use thin toppers that are more washable on the beds and the couch. The better bedding is underneath. As long as you don’t have a burrower, that keeps the stink relatively isolated to just the cover. Eventually, the doggy smell gets to be a bit much and then the cover becomes a dog blanket, lol. Thin, inexpensive, toppers are much easier to replace periodically.

I used to buy the cheap acrylic throws (usually 50" x 60") at Target or Walmart. They’re cheap, you can layer them, and very washable. I put them on the sofas where the dog would sleep in the daytime, on the other side of my bed, and the ottomans I used for the dog to get on the bed easier, and the one he used to look outside.

How often do you bathe your dogs? Once a month may be fine for some dogs. Others do better once a week. Use a good quality dog shampoo, not human shampoo or dish soap.

Hounds do tend to have more odor than other breeds. Some hounds tend to have an oily coat, which will smell bad much more quickly than many other breeds.

Also, coat type is a consideration. You didn’t mention what breed your other dog is but if he has a soft coat like a Poodle, Bichon, or Yorkie, it will hold dirt and odor. Particularly if the dog has a beard. Clipping the face clean, and trimming the feet including between the toes will help cut down on odor and reduce bringing in mud or wet from outside.

An undercoat like a Lab or Shepherd also tends to hold the smell. A smooth, short coat like a Boxer, or Pointer tends to stay very clean and doesn’t smell, even if the dog is not bathed for a month or two.

Also, check that the smell is not coming from the dogs mouth. Teeth in bad shape will give your dog bad breath, which tends to be noticeable. Same with anal glands.

My dogs’ beds get smelly and I’ve found one trip through the washing machine doesn’t remove the smell from the bed covers. Now I’d had better success by soaking the covers in a vinegar/water solution first for a few hours and then washing, with the machine set on extra dirty and extra rinse. It helps.

I cover everything- beds, chairs, couch- with sheets or blankets. That way I can wash everything. Yes, it’s probably permanent.

My dog is a 14YO old treeing walker (think foxhound) and bloodhound is 10YO, not spring chickens. We have all know each other since they were young playful dogs. I probably need to up the bath program, particularly now that it’s getting warmer. The bloodhound could easily get a once-a-week bath. She’s super funky.

Doggy stuff gets washed here with unscented detergent, borax and then hangs on the line for sunlight as long as possible. I find outdoor drying takes the odors out of things better than anything.

I add a scoop of Active Wear wash that I get from Rockin’ Green laundry soap.

Gotta ask. Do you really clean the washer filter thoroughly? My Samsung washer has a difficult to clean one that collects stinky hair. It involves removing a front panel , draining residual washing water from the machine, unscrewing the filter, and taking the filter to the sink to clean it. If not cleaned the next load picks up that odor.

By cleaning I mean using a toothbrush and diswashing liquid to get all the oils on the filter body, not just picking out hair balls.

100% use a capful of KOE in each wash where dog stuff is washed. Kills the odor and leaves fresh as can be.

???

What is KOE?

Wash all dogs/dog laundry/rugs once a week and embrace scent beads they are amazing! Also get rid of carpet if you have any.

KOE Kennel Odor Eliminator - pricey but very concentrated and very effective - I’ve seen it at Chewy’s and Amazon.

We adopted a 3 year old who was very stinky. Turns out she needs thyroid meds. And the stink went away – or at least back to normal dog smell.

Pooph laundry additive is also very effective. Also available at Chewy.

Simple Green in lemon works too, or I put in Clorox Laundry Sanitizer (ok for colors). I hang them to dry outside when I can and then run them through the dryer a bit to take off the hair. One of my dogs now is “houndy” smelling so it’s an extra layer of dog. I actually don’t mind it but we don’t have carpet or anything that hangs on to the smell beyond the dog beds.

Horseware blanket wash. Prewash, wash, rinse, extra rinse. Pine sol/Lysol unless you think that smells worse than dogs!
