I have just bought a 6 yr old arab stallion. He was in his stable when it partially collapsed, in the earthquake in Italy one year ago. He is over coming his fear (psychological scars) and is turning out to be a lovely guy, but he has physical scars (a year old) that I would like to bring back to healthy (not white) hair. Does any one know of natural remedies to get the hair to grow back?
By definition, scars are usually hairless because the new skin doesn’t have normal features like sweat glands and hair follicles. So there really isn’t any way to get an old scar to grow hair.
Short of a skin graft, it’s really not possible to get hair to grow back on old scars.
Actually, I’ve seen hair grow back over old bald scar areas. Usually happened when I applied hair growth products and meds for a year or more on the area, every day. I never gave up despite everyone saying those were permanent hairless areas on several horses. And there is a spray, I’ll need to look at my bottle in the barn, that usually grows hair back even on old scars. One interesting thing was when one of my horses, who had a big scar on a hind leg when I bought her years before, cut her leg in the same place in a pasture. A lot of scar tissue exited that wound so I applied meat tenderizer and antiseptic ointment daily to get rid of what I considered the same as proud flesh, and when it healed hair grew back over the entire area. I was amazed. Keep buying and applying ointments and sprays to old scars and see what happens. I don’t use any drying agents on old healed scars though. Moisturizing helps.
Technically, it wasn’t entirely a scar, then, or not all of the area was scarred. Or, the hair grew from underneath or around the scar. A true scar has no hair follicles, period.
I had an OTTB who was line fired and the hair grew in white. I discovered a spray on hair dye made by Shapleys (the ‘MTG’ folks)
Many thanks Wildandwicked - if you remember the name of the stuff you used I’d be very grateful! I’ve been told olive oil and turmeric mixed so I’ll try that in the meantime.
Here people swear by scarlet oil, old timers used bacon grease.
No telling how any of that may work on your horse.
SBS “Toe Grow.” It really grows hair on old scars. Use daily for however long, months, a year. It works.
I’ve had good luck with scarlet oil and scars.
