How do you keep track of your horses health?

I’ve only been a horse owner for about a year and a half now, and I until very recently I kept my two girls at a boarding facility that took over almost all of the farrier and vet responsibilities for me. They scheduled my appointments, did all the deworming, and kept track of my vet records for me.

I’m now at a place that is much more DIY and I’d love some advice on how you all keep track of your ponies health needs. Are there some apps you use, websites that help you keep track of this stuff or do you just like to use planners, etc?

I do it the old fashioned way, file folders and a large file box for folders. All health, vet records and receipts are kept separately. Everything gets written down for future reference. Worming is recorded with brand, chemical and date. Same for farrier, date, changes made, notation on problems, etc.

Spreadsheet. I am OCD and keep health records as well as weekly ride records. Sometimes something is off and the gets better. Sometimes it comes back. I like to be able to track the first time something is abnormal.

I do it all in a Pony-Club approved “Record Book”… years after PC I still do it… I found my old guy’s record book just the other day and it made me smile.

You don’t have to be a member of PC to do this:

I also keep track of my expenses… but I wouldn’t suggest tallying that up unless you want to cry

My vet emails a copy of the invoice and it goes in a file folder. She also sends out reminder post cards

Farrier gets scheduled 3 visits at a time in 5-6 week intervals.

Get yourself a planner for now, but after a few years it will become second nature.

There are programs for that…but they would be beyond my capabilities.

I use the calendar - “farrier due”, “shots”, etc. but it would be smarter to have a separate calendar, or at least do a separate colour - then I can look back.

I only use one vet - they have all the records it need be…but I can’t bother them all the time.

I have an app called Horse Notes that works well. Before that I wrote everything down on a calendar. All paperwork (coggins, vet bills, etc.) goes in a big file folder and is sorted by date. I also try not to wait to write things down because otherwise I’ll forget.

I keep a calendar on my bedside stand. Every evening I add any comments for the day, like who I rode, how long, what we worked on. I also keep track of farrier, vet appointments and make comments on these as well. I also add any expenses for the month to keep track.

I started with the Pony Club record book, now I keep a bunch of word documents based off the headings in it. It includes pictures of various states of wound healing in the extra vet visits, which is fun to look at
