how do you save an entire thread--so it...

reads the way it did? I’m talking a LOT of pages.

I would love to save my IttyBittyKitty thread as it’s been a chronicle of their existence from even-before-birth…

I’ve no idea how to save the WHOLE thread though. I can save a page at a time, but that doesn’t seem right… ???

Without us modifying the standard software offerings, alas, you do have to save or print out your thread page by page.

If it’s any consolation, a thread as long as yours isn’t in danger of being deleted (purposefully!), so it should remain here as a reference for you.

Threads with 100 posts are generally saved, and depending upon the forum (and how our servers are handling the load) we decrease that limit even more to preserve more threads for reference. We haven’t pruned in a while, as we made some changes to the server to increase the site’s performance with a greater load of threads.

Thanks!

awww… geee… thanks!

It was never the intent, when I posted the warning about the hay scam. Lord only knows these things (threads, not kitties) have a life of their own.

I was thinking about the same thing for our “MATTIE” thread, my mare with cancer in her eye that was pregnant. I wanted to print it all out and just got to page 15 or so before I stopped. Ahhh…I wanted to print it all.

Aww. Sugarbrook, that was an amazing one too. It was such a privelege to share…

We can also move threads that folks have found particularly enjoyable, touching, entertaining, etc. to the “Favorites” forum so they can be highlighted there and easily found. Just send us a note with a link or alert once the thread is no longer being actively posted upon, and we’ll take a peek.

Thanks!

How about an offline “storage archive” on a hard drive somewhere that only the mods have access to, so threads removed from active use aren’t annihilated, but instead just taken offline from whence they someday could be resurrected if need be?

In addition to saving the more recently active and more popular (longer) threads, we also have the Reference forum, where we can move shorter threads that people think would be of value to keep. Anyone can nominate a thread to be potentially moved there if they feel it’s a great thread worth saving for the community at large; otherwise, folks can save threads themselves that are of personal value.

Due to some tweaking we’ve done with the servers and some upcoming changes we’ll be making to all the COTH sites, we should be able to maintain an even greater store of threads on the site. We’re already maintaining about three times the number of threads as we did less than two years ago.

It’s only rarely that we’re contacted regarding a thread that’s no longer available, so for those few instances, it probably wouldn’t be a wise investment of time and resources at this point to maintain all “deleted” threads offline in order to retrieve them on a case-by-case basis.

Thanks for the suggestions–brainstorming never hurts!

Thanks for the suggestion, I wish it had worked.

Well, you can do what I was doing with the Angel saga, but it is labor intensive, a lot of copy and paste from the forum to a Word doc. That way you can just copy what you wrote and leave out the replies to your post.

(which reminds me, I need to figure out where I left off and continue to save them).
