How far North are the barn swallows?

My swallows left over the weekend.

Sigh.

I miss their antics and screeching at me for daring to be in their barn…

Just did a pasture mowing (weeds at this point) and I miss the flock that would swoop down and eat the bugs I kick up. Guess winter is coming…

Until next year…http://birdnote.org/show/nighttime-flights-songbirds

Can’t wait. Until then getting ready for winter that will come sooner than I would like.

I watched a flock of cedar waxwings devour my red huckleberry bush berries on Monday and Tuesday. The bush was absolutely bursting with berries this year. It was an amazing sight. I am a little sad.

Makes my day when they finally arrive. And to think that some people ask how to kill them because they don’t want them in their barns. Makes me so sad. If you are a horse lover, how can you be a swallow hater.

Any one seen their 2016 swallows yet? Ours here in north Texas are late.

I was just thinking they may come here early because we already have bugs with our mild winter in MA

the little darlings won’t be here for a while yet.

We’ve had a fairly mild winter, but are back into winter weather now…so none here for a few weeks.

Had 2 males in the barn this morning-I’m in the Tryon, NC area.

Nothing yet in Mass. Bugs and ticks, yes. Swallows, not yet.

Getting ready here in NoVA. Been tracking for years. Typically they come the 2 or 3rd week in April. Can’t wait to see them again. Adore them.

Is it too late to put up houses in PA?

I’m in southern Indiana - expect mine 2nd wk. in April, too. Haven’t seen any hummingbirds yet - they usually arrive mid March, so hummers appear to be running a little late this year.

The pair that has been using the same nest for years and are always the first to come arrived a few days ago in Aiken. Because they start so early, they sometimes do 3 broods a summer. These birds are little miracles and their happy chatter filling up the barn is the best thing about summer.

I’ll be reading all these posts as I’m in southern Ont. and I’ll be able to follow their migration north. Keep on tracking them.

We’ve had an unusually mild winter here in north Texas so I’m surprised they
are late.

Reading last year’s post I see they did not arrive until April 24th - a month away yet - but I think they were early last year. (Lower Mainland, BC).
