How Important Is It To Give Grain & Equioxx at the Same Time Every Day?

The title is pretty self explanatory: How Important Is It To Give Grain & Equioxx at the Same Time Every Day?

My horse gets his grain (senior feed + ration balancer) every evening around 6-7 PM, with one pill of Equioxx. We’ve been pretty consistent about this. But he’s getting a new half-leaser next month who wants to ride in the mornings, and she’s asked if she can give him his grain & Equioxx in the morning instead of at night so she can avoid coming out to the barn twice on her days. I’m a little hesitant since I want him to have a consistent schedule, especially for the Equioxx, but I figured I’d throw the question out there. It would be about 3x/week, if that’s relevant.

Thank you in advance!

So, horse would be getting Equioxx PM and then right away AM about 3 days a week? So getting it within 12 hours or so some days, and then others not for 36 hours? I don’t think it will cause any ill health benefits, but I wouldn’t be crazy about that. Some people give it every other day so I honestly can’t say. I think you’d have to keep an eye on whether or not your horse appreciates this schedule or the old one.

Also, if someone is going to lease my horse, they need to be part of the good, bad and the ugly. Which may include twice daily trips to barn! What’s in the horse’s best interest, not the leasor’s.

Thanks - that was my impression too, but I wanted a “gut check” to make sure I wasn’t making a big deal out of nothing! The grain is one thing, but the inconsistent schedule w/ the Equioxx is more concerning.

I agree, let lessor know this schedule is part of the deal! Good luck.

By the way, it costs about 50% less to buy 227 mg Previcoxx for dogs and quarter the pills. That’s based on Valley Vet’s prices…my vet price matches. Bought a bottle of Equioxx…then did the math and for $85, can spend a little time with my pill cutter. Got two horses on it.

Thanks! I know a lot of people who give Previcoxx instead. My concerns are 1) my vet doesn’t want to prescribe it for off-label use; and 2) I’ve heard it’s beef flavored and it weirds me out to feed something like that to my horse (unless there are other flavors these days?).

While it wouldn’t be ideal, it wouldn’t be a deal breaker for me.

I currently use Equioxx, as my vet will no longer prescribe Previcox. But I used P for years and never had a horse not eat it due to it’s beef flavor.

If it were me and my horse, I would want him getting the Equioxx about the same time every day. The medication works the best that way.

The grain, I don’t care.

Is there someone you can pay a nominal fee to who will give the horse the grain and pill later in the day on the lessor’s days? You or lessor can even prep everything so all they have to do is dump the bucket in the horse’s feeder.

So the barn technically provides a paid graining service…but it’s not very reliable. When I initially signed up for it, they forgot to give my horse his grain/Equioxx pretty consistently. Once they forgot to grain him 3 out of 5 days. And honestly, if I hadn’t bagged my horse’s grain for that week, I might not have known. They said it would just take a while to get him “in their routine” so they would remember, but with him getting daily Equioxx I figured I should just do it myself. I could probably have his half-leaser pay for this service, and then remind her that she has to text the barn manager on days she’s unable to come out later to give him his grain/Equioxx, but this seems like kind of a pain (not to mention I’m still worried they’ll forget).

Not sure if there’s anyone else at the barn that comes out consistently that I would feel comfortable asking - the one boarder that tends to do this type of stuff is also a morning rider!

Agreed. The Equioxx is more of an issue than the grain.

Do you know if the beef flavor is totally artificial, or if there’s actually some sort of beef extract or something in there? Not sure it matters since my vet won’t prescribe it for off-label use anyway, but I’m curious!
