How long for ENTIRE toenail to grow back?

My sweet little 7 mo old Aussie puppy ripped out her entire toenail. No, not like she broke it off and it bled a little. Like the whole thing was ripped out from under the skin. She was jumping in a friend’s car- toenail went in the track that slides the front seat up and back and when she jerked it just popped off. All that is left is the quick. :frowning:

There was much screaming. There was lots of triple antibiotic ointment and bandaging. There was a trip to the vet after the weekend was over to get 2 weeks of antibiotics. There was a trip to the pet store for lots of extra bones. It’s been 9 days, and the limping is almost better and it hasn’t really bled for two days since the quick has shriveled up a lot now. I’ve been letting her play all she wants with the other dogs, but trying to avoid long walks/runs with me or my horse.

Anyone had this happen? How long till we have a new nail? I’m guessing months, vet wasn’t really sure. She’s a puppy so her nails do grow pretty fast I feel like…

Usually a couple of months or so to determine if the nailbed wasn’t pulled out as well. My experience with this was with a cat, but the growth rate of ‘finger’ nails is about the same for all mammals, humans included - figure a year for complete change… At any rate, the vet (who was here for horse work) looked and said there should be some visible growth in a couple of months, and there was.

Our Aussie pulled out a dew claw at about that age. It grows in kind of odd now and we have to keep it filed or it gets really sharp edges. Poor guy. That’s got to hurt.

No experience with dogs but my cat (who is NOW an indoor cat forever) was attacked by a large neighbor cat years ago and one of her claws got ripped out and never grew back.

I hope it grows back! Sorry about your cat oliverreed. She’s still got the quick left so hopefully there’s something in there that will grow back and form a nail.

It took about 4-6 months for my puppy. She tore a nail almost completely off when she was around 9 months old. There was a ton of bleeding and crying and since she has a fuzzy coat, I couldn’t SEE what was wrong, so rushed her to the vet.

Our vet clipped the small remaining broken-off nail so it wouldn’t get caught on anything, cauterized the wounded area under local anesthetic, and put her on pain meds and antibiotics. A few weeks later she managed to damage it again and it got a little infected - this was potentially a much bigger deal than the original injury, so please learn from our mistake and be sure to keep the paw in question clean and check it often for signs of infection!

A second round of antibiotics took care of the secondary infection and within 6 months she had a decent amount of nail grown back in. We have never had another problem with it - so other than the secondary infection, not a big deal. Long wait for it to grow in though!

I full grown Corgi ripped a nail off the morning of a horse show, don’t know how, but saw the blood when he got in the truck. Never needed the vet… It grew back, but he did it again, so the new nail was not as stable as the original.
