How long to keep mare and foal in foaling stall?

Cause we have one foaling stall and another mare due in two weeks or less. We need to put the next mare in the foaling stall asap.

We have been turning out mom and foal in a pen for an hour a day and have a lovely large stall in an outside barn with an attached small dirt paddock that adjoins to the big pasture.

Foal is 3 days old and healthy and so is mom. Is today too soon to boot them out (sort of out cause they will be inside a stall too)?

You can move her at any time after she foals provided you have somewhere safe for them to go which it sounds as if you do.

Sounds like you could move them right now. Congratulations and good luck.

3 days old? Kick 'em out

if the foal is strong and legs are good, then move them as long as the new area is not too big and the foal has a safe place to lay down and sleep when tired and mom is comfortable there.

Thanks everybody! I just needed a little reassurance which you all gave me. Momma and baby are happier outside with their huge roomy stall and attached paddock.

Baby had a little “run-in” with the fence, but it is no-climb horse fence and she basically bounced off it. One little scratch, but taught her to slow down and remember to stop BEFORE the fence!

I swear I am gonna need extra boxes of hair color!

usually after 2 to 3 days they are bouncing off the walls and ready to get out!

After day one neither of my two wee ones nor their mamas want to be in…at least not all DAY! But then both mares chose to have their babies OUT. In the daytime! Clearly THEY felt “cramped” in the giant " foaling stall"!
