How many dressage tests to enter?

I plan on taking my mare to a dressage show at the end of the month and I’m debating how many tests to enter her in. She’s going because while she schools very well at home and reasonably well in the warm up her dressage ring performance can vary depending on distractions and we don’t get the chance to do multiple tests as she’s an eventer. Although she focuses in a ring when there are horses around her she goes on alert when she’s alone and not jumping. To add insult to injury we trotted down X at the exact moment the barrel racers the next arena over were doing a trick riding display and her lack of focus on me became apparent.

I was planning on entering at least two tests but thought about doing three. One or two at training level and one or two at first level. I am allowed by the rules to enter three, four if I’m doing a rider class. My goal is consistency, obedience, and relaxation and not necessarily a brilliant test.

I’d consider her pretty fit. Yesterday she spent 25 minutes warming up for dressage, a dressage test, a short break, a short warm up for show jumping, a show jumping round, a slightly longer warm up for XC, and then 6:47 minutes at 275 mpm for XC. I had plenty of horse left at the end of the day. She can come off a 15 mile trail ride without breathing hard.

Her second time out of her stall she’d probably need 10 minutes warm up give or take a few minutes, she’s neither young nor green but she just doesn’t go enough strange places.

I find that generally two is plenty, especially if it’s hot out. I have done three but it is a little bit much mentally, more so than physically. But if you enter three you can always scratch if necessary.

I enter three - because my mare needs to learn that a) it is no big deal to go in the little white box, and b) once you’re done in there you do not always get to go run and jumps so starting early (like in the white box) doesn’t get you anywhere. Just go in the ring and do your test. And do it again. And then again. boring…

If you enter 3, you can always stop if you are happy with 2.

Also, keep in mind that Training 3 & up are in the large arena - which didn’t help me as she’s better with more space. So I enter Training 1 and 2 and pick one test to ride twice - just ask to ride HC.

Also, you only have to learn 2 tests if you do that!

I am recently rejoining the Dark Side and am in the process of entering a dressage schooling show later this month. I’m going to do 3 tests: one at Intro and two at Training (dressage tests not eventing dressage tests) because the dressage issue is ME, not my horse. The more times I can get in the white box and be soft and forward the better for both of us!

I don’t do more than 2 because I don’t think I can memorize more than that. My brain turns off after 5pm on Fridays. lol.

I ride three Training or First level tests at a one day show. Or two tests per day at a multi- day show.

I think it depends on the objective of the day. If it is just to get in the ring to practice, I think two is probably plenty. MAYBE three. But probably two. If your objective is to get a naughty horse to learn the fun jumping phases don’t automatically follow the boring dressage part, I would enter three or even four (and ask to be scheduled close together, if not one right after another). Always with the mindset if things go we you might scratch the last test or two. I have done this strategy before and it can really beneficial. BUT, it would not be my strategy for a horse that I just want to go practice on and have a little fun with.

Although she can be naughty (bucking into the canter transitions because going faster means having fewer feet on the ground to oggle things) she’s mostly just not paying attention. She’ll go around and do the transitions and figures but she’s not interested in going on the bit or being soft and round despite the fact that she’s good in the schooling ring and good at home. If it’s in a location that she’s comfortable with and especially if her friends are around her she’s much better.

Is this a USEF recognized dressage show? If so, rule DR 119 (Section 2) applies:

“Horses…are limited to a maximum of three Dressage rides per day at Fourth Level and below…”

Yes, that’s why I’m questioning if I should enter TWO or THREE tests. I would be showing in two first level tests and one training level test if I did three.

I would enter three. It doesn’t sound like she will get tired but if that’s a concern you can always use the training level test as part of your warm up.

I did 2 at the show I went to yesterday just b/c I can’t stomach THREE in one day LOL. We were there long enough as it is for JUST DRESSAGE

I missed that it was a USEF show. Three then.

It’s a schooling show but it does follow USEF rules. I’m not stupid enough to enter a recognized show on short and hairy!

It also says “formal attire required” which is a bit dressagy for me.
