Thanks for posting these videos! I never thought about the origins of 20 Mule Team Borax and found the history fascinating.

There are as many ways to run the lines on a multiple hitch as there are ways to hitch. There are jockey sticks and buck back ropes as 2 examples of ways to tie them in. In a 4 abreast I have seen them drive the middle pair or the outside pair and tie the others in. It just depends on the teamster and the horses.

Grandpa always put lines on the best horses and tied the renegades in while his brother put lines on the renegades and ties the good horses in. Both made it work with the horses they had.

If you want to try a wild hitch try driving a pair on a bull or buck rake. There is a horse on each side of the rake. They are separated by about 10 feet. I finally changed the lines to have a single line on each horse. Basically I had stop and go on each horse and drove the rig like a crawler tractor. Stop one horse and the other go forward to make a turn. Things got more interesting when we put a tandem of ponies on each side. Then we tried a pair of ponies on each side. Thank goodness for broke horses.

Tandem of ponies vs. pair of ponies - one behind the other vs. side-by-side?

Yes.

R-AR, I thought that was a very good bunch of Qs you posted. Interesting answers till we got sidetracked.

OK, I’m gonna go out this morning and drive with lines instead of the reins I always use. Didn’t know I had that all wrong. Wonder if the ponies will notice the difference?

Tomorrow, I’m going to drive with reins for the first time ever. That sure will please the hub. He cannot rremember any of the harness part names. He thought he had reins right, but I corrected him to lines. Not to worry, he has probably already forgotten lines (from this afternoon). He still gets halter and bridle mixed up, after almost 9 years with horses.

Yip

^ That’s just your version of reality.

Many would say that the side tracking came at post 5 with:
