How much benadryl for my itchy dog?

My Welsh terrier has developed a bad case of the itchies over the past couple days. I think it’s some kind of contact grass/pollen allergy. She’s biting her paws and lower legs, licking her belly and inside her flanks.

She’s 8.5 years old. 22-23 lbs.
It’s not fleas. She had her monthly Trifexis yesterday.

I’ve bathed her in an oatmeal/lavender shampoo and lots of conditioner. That helps some.

I’ve applied a homeopathic remedy (mostly tea tree oil, lavender, chamomile and … some other stuff) to her belly and flanks. That helps some, but I’d rather not apply it to places with a lot of hair.

Soonest I can get in to her regular vet is 9:15 am Friday. This isn’t an emergency, but I’d like to keep her comfortable and keep her from damaging her skin and bringing us more problems.

I haven’t changed laundry detergent, her diet’s consistent (sensitive skin/stomach formula). She was groomed last week and is brushed regularly, so it’s not mats.

Any suggestions? TIA

Benadryl is usually 1mg per lb. I think it usually comes in 25 mg tablets so your dog can have 1 tablet every 8 hours.

thank you!

Never give it to a dog with a history of seizures… it can reduce the seizure threshold. Just have to do my safety addendum:)

I appreciate this! Nope, no seizures here.

I always have Benedryl on hand - our Boxer snuffles the bees in the clover on the lawn - she sure looks silly with her lips all puffed up. It is important to be able to get the swelling down in case any swelling reaches her throat and she cannot breathe. So far this year she’s not done that so perhaps learned a lesson? Hopefully.
