I realize this may be all over the map and there are a lot of variables here, but curious how much you’d expect to pay for a top warmblood broodmare or prospect (dressage)? What about a proven producer vs. a young prospect with a pedigree of proven producers?
I’ve retired three performance mares to broodmare careers. The first one we sold as a open maiden. She was a sweetheart with good hunter bloodlines (top and bottom) and an “okay” 3’ record in the performance ring. She went for 3K.
The second mare also had good bloodlines and her sire was quite popular. She had a decent 3’ performance record and she was in foal to a top hunter stallion. She went for 8.5K.
The last mare was uber fancy - ribboning at some top shows in the professional hunter divisions (Lake Placid, Old Salem May, Garden State etc.). We turned away six figure offers before she was injured. She sold in foal to a top hunter stallion for 10K.
Mare with performance career to 1.40m, TOP bloodlines, had produced a 1.60m offspring - sold for $15,000 open.
Mare with so-so performance career, excellent bloodlines, had produced a licensed stallion - sold for $15,000 in foal to a hunter stallion.
I think it depends a lot on the age of the mare. You can expect to get a lot more foals from a 10 year old mare than an 18 year old. Also whether or not the mare is sound should influence the price.
I paid a fair bit of money for my first dressage broodmare after looking for two years. She simply ticked ALL my boxes- young (8), sound, beautiful, high percentage of blood with a jumping damline, had been started under saddle and completed a successful mare performance test earning SPS title, already a proven broodmare with three foals all of which were judged premium at their foal inspections earning her Elite mare title, and she was in foal to a top stallion for a foal that was desirable to me to either sell or own. I actually ended up more than doubling my original 10k budget because I absolutely had to have her. I kept the first filly that she was carrying when I bought her, and sold the first foal I bred out of her for 20k. The year she wasn’t in foal for me I rode her and loved it. She has produced 100% premium foals with the six she has produced to date. She is my unicorn and worth every cent I spent on her.
