How much growth to expect from a 2 year old?

Pretty much what the title asks! I purchased her about a month before her 2nd birthday, May 2012. When she arrived I measured her at 15.2hh in the front and 15.3hh in behind. In the first couple months of being here she grew a couple inches. She’s still uneven and bum high. Her breeder told me that her full sister was 15.3hh when she was 2 and by the time she was 3 she was 17hh!

I had made arrangements to finally move my gelding home and had purchased another horse. That sale fell through the day before I was to move my guy (no fault of mine). Since I had already given my notice my stall was filled and had no choice but to bring my guy home by himself. I was not too thrilled about this, and he was even less thrilled! I decided to find him a companion, something that wasn’t a lawn ornament as that’s what he is  and it needed to be cheap!

I finally found an ad that seemed like a suitable horse. We get to the barn and the horse is 3 legged lame. Owner’s not sure what’s happened but, we’re in luck because she “breeds” horses and has a whole herd for us to pick through! She takes us to a paddock that is about 40ft x 40ft and not only are there 10 horses, but 10 cows in as well!!! Not a blade of grass anywhere, mud up to their knees. As we’re wading through the sea of mud and dodging cows, this one cute horse keeps coming up for attention. The breeder knew I was looking for something that was taller, or would finish above 16.2hh. She had 2 that matched, this cute attention seeker or another horse. We watched them move and the attention seeker was definitely the best, and pretty darn cute!

Now here’s where I’m a little bit iffy on the details I was given. The breeder wasn’t 100% sure at first what the horse’s name was that we were interested in. She said she had a system of halter color to determine year born and first letter of their name to determine the dam. Breeder goes into her office and pulls the file, says this mare is about 30 days away from her second birthday. She definitely looked like a baby, but I wasn’t sure if she was that young.

The breeder told me she had been feeding 1/2 scoop oats and barley mixture once a day. Not exactly what I would feed a growing youngster! When she arrived I slowly switched her to some quality feed, grass and hay. I know I can’t make up for the lost years of nutrition, but I can control what happens from here on out!

I guess I will never know for sure her age, but I’m going with the date I was given. And I love her all the same!

I find they grow about 2 inches after Christmas of their 2nd year — but others will tell you they can grow a hand or more. Depends on the growth pattern of the other offspring from that mare, quite often.

I bought a 5 year old off the track… 15.1 when I bought her. She ended up 16hh… So you never know.

The general rule of thumb is add 4" to the 24 month height.
