I found the ideal person to lease my horse, Rusty, but have no idea what to charge. Rusty is a great horse, 8 yr. old, very well-mannered. I don’t have an arena or round pen, but I have 8 acres to ride on with some nicely groomed trails. The gal leasing will be able to ride as often as she likes. I pay for feed, vet, farrier. I am not looking to make a profit, I am just thrilled that he will be getting more attention and exercise from such a good person. Any advice on a reasonable rate? Thanks in advance.
Most of the time, these leases are arranged for the cost of board & feed only. Sometimes the rider will also pay for half of farrier. Owner pays for vet care.
If it was a show horse and a great facility, then sometimes there can be additional fee. Hunter/jumper show horses are leased for a larger fee: 25% of the “value” of the horse goes to the owner, plus all costs are paid by leasor.
I would require the the girl to get insurance as part of the lease for liability and major medical. It would be awful if your horse sustained an injury while the girl was riding him.
I have leased a couple horses-one a half lease that I paid half of all expenses: feed, board, farrier, vet, etc. The other was a full free lease. No lease fee, but all expenses were on me. Feed, board, shoes, vet, transport, etc.
Around here in a situation as you describe (a trail riding horse on owners property) $200-$300 a month lease if the owner is covering feed, vet & farrier.
