How oval is the Charles Owen's MIPS helmet?

Happy Thanksgiving!

If anyone has the Charles Owen’s MIPS helmet, I would love to know how it is for those with a truly oval head.

I already tried the Trauma Void Lynx and could not deal with the feeling of the adjustment knob in the back. Too bad as it was a lovely helmet.

For the longest, I have worn the IRH Long Oval which is great, but would love the newer safety features. Also, time to replace it.

All input appreciated.

Happy riding,
Jessie

Not sure if this helps, but I have the CO ayr8 leather lookand the CO Ayrbrush and the mips fits very similar to those 2 helmets. I also had a Trauma Void but I could never get it to fit properly.

I know there is at least 1 thread in the eventer forum about the helmet. Super informative.

It’s about the same as my 2007 Tipperary sportage, snug yet comfortable. The later version tip was not as good a fit. IMO quite oval enough. Mine is very snug but after a bit I don’t even notice it. Harness is padded leather and also very comfortable.

I just got the My PS to replace an AYR8 I had a fall in. I think the shape is the same as the AYR8. I did go up one size because it seems to fit a bit snugger.

The sizing seems consistent with the AYR Plus (also one size difference for me between this and the AYR) and it sits a little deeper on my head.

For what it’s worth, I also have a long oval head and a limited number of helmets fit me well. I tried on all the TraumaVoid models in person with a Back on Track staffer and unfortunately we both agreed none of them fit.

A CO rep told me that the MyPS helmet fits the same as the AYR8. I found the AYR8 somewhat oval but not extremely oval. I have a round head, and bought the AYR8 as in the store it felt like it fit, but after it settled it is a little bit too oval. I just bought the anti-rock block at the rep’s suggestion.

Funny you just posted this. I returned my CO MyPS helmet and bought the Lynx Trauma Void. I could not stand the weight of the new CO and I felt it looked even bigger than my old Ayr8. The lining also wasn’t very secure in the helmet and moved around. I am so glad I didn’t suck it up and keep the CO. I absolutely love the Trauma Void, it’s lighter and for me looks much smaller than the CO.
Helmets are such a personal choice. So you may just need to give it a try and see how it works for you.

I have a Trauma Void EQ3 that I really like. I bought it before the Lynx came out so I don’t know how they compare. I had several Tipperary Sportage over the years, size large. The EQ3 is 7 1/8 (medium in Lynx) and the fit is fine.

A young friend is a working student at a Florida dressage barn. She mentioned on the phone one day that the harness on her CO was getting pretty ratty. I would not let her procrastinate. I ordered a Lynx in 2 sizes and a CO from SmartPak and they shipped them to her. She chose the medium Lynx. The dial allows her to fine tune it to her very frizzy hairdo of the day.

SmartPak (and now Dover) offers free returns on sized items. My credit card groaned but she chose what fit and returned the others. I didn’t push the Trauma Void with the MIPS technology so I’m glad she chose it for fit, not brand name.

My VERY long oval head will only fit the IRH long oval, which I quickly just bought another of as I hear they aren’t going to make them anymore. CO does not fit me at all, the Trauma Void also was a big nope. Even the rep said no as she couldn’t get it to fit.

So, the CO Wellington Pro fits me pretty much perfectly. Following to see if others who share my head shape have tried the MyPS.

So I just ordered the last IRH Extreme Elite long oval in my size from Riding Warehouse. It was a steal.

Since more helmet makers are coming out with MIPS technology in the new year, I will wait to see what is offered and hopefully one will be a long oval shape. Based on comments here and on some reviews, I was not sure if the CO would be oval enough and the comments about the liner moving were not ideal.

Thank you all for your thoughts and experiences.

That’s where I just got mine from.

How different are the GR8s and AYR8? The GR8 fits so great, after years of headaches not understanding an ovalish head, I hesitate to try anything else. But man CO has not budged on price even as other, different, better helmets have come out…

The GR8 fits me perfectly, but the AYR8 is a bit more oval. I also confirmed this with a CO rep (that the shapes are different).

OK so sounds like the MIPS will also be too oval. Thank you  I don’t live near any tack stores that stock a large number of helmets.

Have you tried the EQ3 yet? Since we both fit the GR8 like a glove, and I fit the EQ3, it sounds promising for you! That way you can have a MIPS helmet.

ETA - I have a tiny head (6 5/8, I take XS in Tipperary). I’ve heard the bigger your head, the tougher the EQ3 is to fit (maybe larger heads aren’t shallow enough?). But worth a try anyway.

I also have a small head, I think 6 7/8 with my hair in it. Thanks again.

@SolarFlare hoping you see this… did your GR8 and the EQ3 have the same size? If I order my normal size? I saw a description that said measure and then order up.

I know the OP already got another but chiming in because I actually have some insight. The CO MIPS fits me well, as does the Hampton and the Fian. The Pro II is too round.

I did end up getting the same size in both! (6 5/8)

ETA - if I’d gone up a size it would definitely have been too big. I also buy my CO helmets pretty tight to start, as the memory foam likes to settle in after some use. The EQ3 doesn’t have memory foam to settle.
