Hi, I have a 3.5 year old friesian stallion that is being gelded. How long after gelding can he travel by horse trailer? Horse is going from Florida to Oklahoma…Thanks in advance!!!
Immediately! But I would try to avoid trailering in the heat.
Ask the vet what they recommend. If he was a yearling or 2 year old and the ride was an hour or less, you can haul them home in a few hours. Coming 4 going on a 1k mile ride? I should think after the swelling reduces and the incision completely closed and dry. Maybe 10 days-2 weeks? Would worry about them being immobile on the trailer for 16 hours or more any sooner. They have to move to keep the swelling down and allow it to drain itself and heal.
Well we drove a 5yo an hour to a vet, who gelded him in a field behind the vet’s office (unsure why we had to drive him instead of using our field but whatever).
As soon as he could stand we reloaded him and took him home. But that was a much shorter journey.
I would wait a couple of weeks for a trip that long, or he’s likely to be super stiff when he gets there.
We gelded my then 6 year old in Holland. We had to keep delaying export because he was too swollen. So it will depend on the individual horse and how he heals up. Keep him moving!
I would wait at least a week or longer since exercise is best to keep the swelling down. Once he is over the worst with the pain and the swelling is reducing then ship him.
Sometimes it is worse the older they are. Are you hauling him yourself? That will make a difference as they seem to be stuck on commercial transport way longer .
