How tall is American Pharoah?

? can’t find it online.

One article I read said 16.1. Don’t know if that’s correct.

I’d have guessed 16.1 as well, just eyeballing it.

My guess is 16.1 or maybe 16.2

I would guess in the neighborhood of 16 or 16.1, though when I saw him, I was looking down at him a bit (Oaklawn paddock). He’s really a very average, plain-looking horse at first glance; that was my initial thought as he entered the paddock. Then at second glance, you notice the attitude and professional demeanor, and you notice how well balanced all the parts are. Then when he’s moving, you notice the floating stride, and by that point, he doesn’t look plain at all anymore in spite of the standard wrapper.

16.1 seems like a reasonable guess. He’s not all that big. Now Dortmund seemed to be a big ol’ hoss!

Found a USA Today article that quoted Baffert as saying he is 16.1, so I guess that’s right! (He was comparing him to Dortmund, who is 17 hands.)

He’s amazing. I try to explain to my nonhorsey husband and friends that American Pharoah is huge…but I don’t mean tall. He’s not, and he’s not beefy. He’s just an indescribably (well, difficult to describe) gorgeous, muscular specimen.

He may be a “plain” bay, but he still sticks out like as if he were a leopard spotted appy on the track. There is nothing plain about anything else about him.

He has good bone. So he can hold up much better than some of the more fragile looking colts. And he can set the pace and win from the front of the race, and is still strong enough to win at 1 1/2 miles.

bone density is impossible to tell from the outside of a horse… he may be big boned but big bones does not equal longevity or quality, the same way a thinner boned or “fragile boned” looking horse does not equal weakness… i’ve met tons of arabs with pencil legs that had more bone density than a percheron, just FYI.

i never saw AP as a plain wrapper… he’s got too much of a commanding presence  i may be biased, as the plain bays are my favorite.
