How tall of a trailer do I need for 16-17hh TBs/WBs?

I know it would be preferable to get a 7’ - 7’6’’ tall trailer but I literally keep searching all around the North Texas area and all I can find is 6’6’’ tall. I know this will be a tight fit for a 16.3hh horse… Does anyone haul their bigger horses in a 6’6’’ trailer or should I absolutely get something taller? I seriously can’t find anything :frowning:

Thanks.

I would get 7’6. You might be able to get away with 7’ if the horse is a great hauler and carries its head low, but there’s no way I would get anything shorter.

Agreed. I would NOT put my horse in a 6’6" tall trailer.

Have you checked Horsetrailerworld.com There is a ton of trailers listed on there. I just did a quick search of within 100 miles of zip code 75092

Found quite a few that are 7’ or taller in many price ranges and options.

Best part of that website is in the advanced search area you can designate many options you are looking for.

I am pretty sure my Trail-et is 7’. I have had 17H horses in there with no problem. A boarder had a Friesian Sporthorse who was 17.2+. His neck tied in very high on his chest so he was naturally very high headed. She loaded him in my Trail-et and that was a little close. If he threw his head he could have fairly easily hit his head on the roof. She loaded him on mine to try to figure out how tall of a trailer she needed to buy. I think she got a 7’ and just used a poll bumper pad just in case. This was to move him from SE PA to St. Louis.

I would not go with 6’6"

We’ve used an 8’ tall trailer for the past 30 years! What kind/how big a trailer are you looking for?? We are just north of you in Oklahoma and have a nice OS/WB GN, 8’ high for sale. ps…you can’t find taller/bigger trailers around here because the ranch horses are short QH’s!!

Turnbow Trailers are made in Oklahoma & are fantastic. They have lots of trailers that are 7’ or 7’6" tall.

I think that 7’6" is nice, but probably overkill for most horses in the 16-17h range. But, 6’6" feels too low to me. I think that a trailer ceiling should be high enough that a random head toss isn’t going to result in a whack against the ceiling, and I think 7’ should give you that for most taller horses.

I agree, I absolutely wouldn’t go any less than 7’. My 16.2 hand boys are OK in my 7-footer but next time I shop I’m going 7’6" if I can. Also, consider how long your horses are if you get a slant. My one gelding carries his head and neck out in front of him and he’s really squished length-wise if I shut him into the middle stall of my 3-horse. When he rides alone, he gets the middle slot but I leave the divider open so he ends up with 1 1/2 stalls. He’s much more comfortable that way.

FYI…“TB” trailers are marketed and sold at 7’6" or taller!! 7’ is not tall enough for a 17 hand WB!! Do the math. 17 hands is 5’7 at the withers. Figure raised neck and head…
