Hi! How can you delete a post that you’ve already gotten an answer to so it doesn’t bore other folks.

COTH doesn’t like this. The members put a lot of effort into thoughtful replies. The idea is the thread then stands as a resource for the next person who is searching for that topic. Deleting a post would mean that you delete all our answers and we don’t like that!

If the post is boring no one will respond and it will go way down in the results and no-one will see it anyhow.

You can delete your original question and leave a headless post, but all our responses and any quotes we took from you will remain in the thread. COTH in general dislikes that because all our responses stay up, but are rendered a bit useless because the original question disappears.

If you have inadvertently given too much information in a post, you can go back and edit out details but of course if those posts have already been quoted in the thread, you can’t edit those out. That’s why COTH members tend to quote any OP that look like they might go poof.

COTH is not Facebook. We don’t delete things just because we got an answer. Some threads continue on for months with a totally different direction than the OP intended, and maybe even get revived years later. Your thread does not really belong just to you after members start posting.

You may delete any post with the edit function and there the delete tab.
As for deleting a whole thread or a post that has been quoted, Scribbler above, explained well how to and why not.
Scribbler really covered it on why We Don’t Do That Here. I’ll just add–if you do deleted the original post on a thread, and your subsequent replies, that gets A LOT of attention. Lots! People will click on that thread just to see what happened and why you deleted everything and what on earth the problem is.
So if you’re looking for something to go away and not be of interest, deleting your content is really the opposite of doing that. :yes:
