How to find a room for rent in Aiken for the season?

I’m trying to work out if it will be possible for me to go down south to Aiken this year. However, the costs for my housing are going to be the deciding factor. I’d love to find a room in a shared house that I can rent for a month to two months instead of needing to secure an entire house for just me, and put my horse someplace like Full Gallop on a rough board arrangement.

How would I go about finding something like this? Is there a secret message board I should know about?

I suggest using FB - search for this Group: Aiken Area Dressage, Eventing, & Show Jumping - post your need there and you’ll get good suggestions. Good luck!

I’d also just post on Facebook. There may be someone you know who would split with you. Another alternative is renting an RV. Also, talk to people you may want to train with…Sally Cousins for example may have connections with people who are coming down for her.

Agree with the RV… some trainers will let you live on site with the RV… IIRC, a friend did or does that w/ Pippa Moon. Who will you be training with? I have a few friends down there, I can ask around if you want.

airbnb may have some options as well

Aiken does young TB training in the winter, doesn’t it? There ought to be some boarding houses or cheap motels for the people who work with the young TBs. If there are, it ought to be quite possible to do a couple of months with cheap lodging.

Airbnb has rooms for rent for decent prices. I just reserved a guesthouse, 1br and 2 bath for around $80/night I think. It would have been cheaper at a monthly rate. You can find stuff in the $50/night range if you’re just looking to rent a room in a house. Book soon, places are already filling up.

$80/nt would be $2400/mo - that’s a little more than I was hoping to spend (a lot more…) I don’t need cheap-cheap but I was hoping to find something more in the $700/mo range for an apartment split which I don’t think is unreasonable.

Contact the people renting the rooms even if they don’t post they do long term. Elsewhere I am renting a room for $500 a month, but she charges more along the lines of $65 per night, but since I will be there long term (think 4 months) she is giving me a much lower rate. Don’t be afraid to reach out to the people on airbnb. That is where I found this living arrangement. Given, it isn’t aiken during the winter season, but don’t be afraid to ask.

I was in Aiken from November through mid-April this past winter and found a place to rent (and share) via the Facebook group previously mentioned, though I think that was a one off thing. It seems nobody plans ahead and rentals don’t become available until mid-December for the Jan-March season. Around Christmas there were tons of rentals posted on the Facebook group. I personally like to plan more than that.

Chiming in here as I would love to do 2+ weeks in late February if I could find an affordable arrangement. My last trip to Aiken a few years ago was a disaster - still suffering from symptoms of PTSD - but if I was confident that living arrangements would be good, I could go back and keep my horses at one of the well-known facilities.
