Yes, if I didn’t suck at stud cleaning, this may not be an issue but it is end of season and I have a bunch of rusty studs. I am reading on the interweb you can soak them overnight in vinegar. Anyone else try this?
I’ve never done anything other than occasionally spray them with WD40.
Stud Suds will help if they aren’t rusted too badly - https://www.bitofbritain.com/Stud-Suds-p/0359.htm
With either this or WD-40, you’ll want to clean the rust gunk off the threads with a wire brush after you soak/spray.
You’ve got me curious about the vinegar. Please share if it works!
I store studs in a container of WD-40. When I need them they get wiped off.
WD-40 and a toothbrush, wipe with a rag. Don’t worry about a little rust, it will wear off the next time you use them.
If metal is rusty and you have a little time, soak it in CocaCola. It will eat the rust off after a few days. My dad worked in metal fabrications and he taught me that trick. Might have to wire brush afterwards though.

WD 40 and steel wool.
OMG! I came home tonight after soaking my very rusty studs 24 hours inn apple cider vinager and was stunned! All of the rust had melted off. Rinsed them off, cleaned the threads , will let them dry and then spray in WD40. Yeah! Tricks for lazy folks who don’t clean their studs!
See my above post. It was a miracle! My studs were bad. 24 hours in apple cider vinegar although I read that white vinegar works also.
CLR for however long needed ~1hr, may need a wire brush or something similar during the soaking.
and then stud suds to protect.
