How to get skunk smell out of carpet

So I let the dog out last night to do her thing. She took off like a shot after something in the field, came back about 2 minutes later and wanted back inside. As she came in the door I caught a whiff of skunk and before I could stop her she was trying to rub the smell off on the carpet. Now my entire house smells like skunk. I have skunk odor remover shampoo for the dog, but does anybody know how to get skunk smell out of the carpet?

My sincere sympathy for the stench

Could you test a spot on the carpet using the dog shampoo?
It may work on the carpet fiber as well as it works on the dog’s coat :crossed_fingers:

I thought about doing that. Unfortunately she rubbed herself all over the carpet, not in just one spot. She went down on her chest and slid along the length of the room, so the smell is diffused all over. :skunk:
I was hoping somebody knew of some miracle spray to use.

I meant to test a spot to make sure it wouldn’t stain/discolor or otherwise damage the carpet.
If it works, have at it with a carpet shampooer machine. Around here hardware & grocery stores rent them.
Or… They did, pre-pandemic

Can you do the peroxide/dawn/baking soda mix?

That’s what works for our dogs provided we don’t add water first. Just the mixture, let soak and then wash. But peroxide might bleach your carpet….

On a carpet, all over, I’d first try baking soda. Sprinkle, let sit, vacuum. Adding plain water seems to make it worse, so I’d avoid that
