Thought so!

This! I don’t know why so many horse pros think their behavior off the horse is somehow exempt from what we think of them. I call this their ground manners. If they have lousy ground manners I don’t care if they won Olympic gold, they don’t get my money

My basic question is how the saddle left the OP’s hands without full payment? I have never been able to take anything on trial without having to pay in full for that, with clearly defined terms about how the trial and potential refund would go.

I’m rtflol here!:rofl: But, omg is this spot on!

My first thought when you couldn’t get your money was that she sold it and is making excuses. Actually, I’m surprised she was just jerking your chain for a while.

My husband loaned a saddle he had to young women not far from him for a week trial. After a week, he called to ask about it and they hemmed and hawed and didn’t return the saddle or make payment. Another week goes by and this time they didn’t answer the phone. He goes to their house and they are tacking up to go trail riding, yes with his saddle. DH said he could read their lips and it wasn’t Happy Birthday but Oh Sh__. They thought they were going to put him off forever and not pay, but he called their bluff and came home with the saddle. Too bad, so sad.

I can see how that could happen from a trusting person like OP. I don’t think it’s that easy to sell a used saddle these days. If she got a good price and wasn’t strapped for money, she probably figured she could wait.

Actually it’s VERY easy to sell used saddles these days. The used saddle market is as hot as the horse market because many folks need saddles for their new horses! Unfortunately the OP learned the hard way that people can’t be trusted - whether you know them or not. That’s why retailers, saddle sites, etc. only let you take a saddle on trial after paying in full FIRST.

Yeah, it’s a miracle! She actually made the final payment last night after my last (threatening) text message to her. This process started on May 18 and it has taken 18 or so text messages from me to get it resolved - most of which were either extending deadlines or reminding her of missed or upcoming deadlines along with threats to report the saddle as stolen, file a police report, file a small claims action, etc.

I am so relieved to have it finally resolved and I am sure she is too. I hope she didn’t have to put off paying the vet (or whatever) so she could pay me, but at least this particular financial matter is officially closed.

And for those who wondered why I let her take the saddle without payment up front - I wasn’t involved in it. It was still at my former trainer’s barn and she let her take it on trial based on references from several acquaintances we all have in common.

I would have words with your former trainer about all the difficulties because the references were inaccurate characterizations of her at this time. Maybe three years ago she was reliable, but not in 2021.

I am SO glad you got your money AT LAST.

Happy ending after all that!

You need to change the wording in this post to SOME PEOPLE can’t be trusted. There are still plenty of people who can be held to their word and pay promptly. OP just didn’t get one of those people.

Glad you got paid in full @DownYonder

The thing that makes the wording right is that you (general you that is selling something) have no way of knowing if the person you are selling to is the trustworthy or not trustworthy type, so best to assume that no one will pay on time.

That is why whenever I sell something ( item or animal) I never let it leave my sight without full payment ( in cash) at the time . I know that is opposite of what I said above but I am not willing to take that chance myself.

That doesn’t mean that the majority of people are not honest, though. I guess that makes no sense.

I’m glad you finally got paid. If she had extenuating circumstances it was ON HER to come to you with an explanation and an apology.
