How to keep mare out of heat...?

Hi All,
I have a mare (knew I should have gotten a gelding:eek:) who when is in heat is a real B%^&*. She is touchy as in “OMG your leg is touching me!!!” ugh she is just pissy in general. Now having said that when she is not in heat she is really good at her intended purpose but…I am fed up with it…I just want to ride with out the PMS. I am female to so I really do understand the PMS thing but still.

So my question is…Is there something I can do to keep her out of heat ? and no breeding her is not a option…lol:lol: I like the spaying idea but it really isn’t a option for varies reasons.

My vet is coming out next week for her shot and general yearly well being check so I’d like to get some idea to present to him. And I will ask him but its sunday and I needed to vent this!!

in her uterus, that is. They simulate pregnancy and last anywhere from a few months to years. You know when she is missing them by her renewed heat cycles.

Regumate is also a possibility, but costly, daily, and human side effects if you get it on you/in you.

Marbles??? Can you tell me about that? What is involved with inserting that? Pennies? is that a joke? I am not being sharky I just really have no real idea about mare heat and things to help it other then breeding or Regimate which is pricey. I have always had geldings or stallions and was never into the breeding thing.

Also I am sorry about the vent I am in from ridding very frustrated with her and needed to vent.

Regumate can also be given as an injection now. It is specially compounded by some pharmacy and your vet has to order it, but it is much safer for the human than giving it daily/orally and works well. Yes expensive.

re: marbles…I remember reading years ago that the bedu used to insert date pits into the camels to prevent them from cycling…the original IUD. A friend tried the pennies in the water tank thing and claimed she saw a difference…go figure…

We tried the marble thing…it didn’t work for us. She started acting horsey at home…peeing and winking…then a few days later we found the marble in her stall at a horse show…so, she was acting horsey before the marble came out. I think my vet said there is about a 60% success rate.

We use regumate and it helps her a lot. She was not fun to ride when cycling without it.

gotta love those mares…My girly was in season last week when we went off to a show; the first day and 1/2 in her stall she put on a show that was down right embarrassing. But go figure, she went in the ring and did her job really quite well. Lucky for me…
I’d try marbles first, then go from there.

I did try mare magic but didn’t really see any difference. She is so touchy god forbid you use your leg on her when riding…ears pinned,kicking,bucking, and sometimes a little squeal…:eek:. I know it just her heat because its not all the time she’s like that.

I forgot to mention that the bio-release version of Altrenogest (Regumate) is long-acting and comes in a 12 day or 30 day coverage version.

I would love to spay her but I think the price will be a factor. Also is there a difference in just removing the overies vs a “spay” or is that the same? I will certainly ask my vet.

I did the marble with my old mare, I noticed a difference for a few weeks but then she started cycling again. Put her on Regumate and she was much more comfortable and happier. My current mare is on Regumate because while she is so sweet, she was having a hard time focusing when in work. Handling the Regumate isn’t as bad as everyone says, especially with the super cool dosing gun that can be purchased for it. Regumate is expensive, but ask your vet for the trial period dose, it is usually a 10 day dose and you should see a difference in about 3 days, that way you won’t have to shell out a lot of money to find out if it will work. If you put your mare on it, after a few months you can play around with the dosage and see if she will respond to a lower dose to help save money.

When did it start being given as an injection? I am so glad I saw this, I’ve been searching for Regumate alternatives because I thought it only came in form for putting in feed, which is dangerous for my situation. Thank you thank you thank you

I do hope all of you who feel “handling” the Regumate is the only issue. Everytime you come in contact with the mares saliva (such as when you are bridling here) YOU are exposed to the hormones. Same when she snorts on you.

Yes the marble did evolve from the use of date pits in camels (they still do this) and with a 60% success rate it’s worth the try.

I just worry that so many young gals are being exposed to Regumate and don’t worry about the possible issues it can cause for them now and in the future.

As I breeder I will never use Regumate - don’t want my mares, myself, my husband or anyone that works for me exposed to hormones. The problems that hormone replacement therapy in women is scarey enough. Also, I’ve heard too many stories of mare that were given Regumate for competition careers ended up very hard to breed later on.

My mare has been marbled for 5 years, and it works great. Our vet school has a 75% success rate, which is pretty good, and it cost just about $100.00.

I honestly was never informed of this and am very glad to know. If you stop them from having it, will the Regumate in their system go away? Will it still have the possibility of it getting on you from their saliva?

We used a marble on a young mare for one season. Worked great! Haven’t needed to use one since.

You are welcome! Did you see my other post further down where I give the link to Bet Labs who does the compounding. They have a 12 and 30 day version. My vet told me about it a couple of years ago. I used the 30 day version for one mare, and it worked fine. My vet was just out the other day (for a sad reason to use Regumate) and she ordered it for me again. She did caution me that you need to use two needles: one to draw into the syringe, and then put a new needle on to inject. It is thick/grainy in the bio-release form, and tends to coat the needle, hence the need to use two to avoid tissue reactions. I personally had no problem two years ago before the caution was implemented.
